Couldn't find anything recent in the searches so asking here

Have in a week in the Weymouth area in August so after some ideas

I know it will be heaving with Grockles (us included!) but any tips on interesting places to go to. We have kids of 10 and 12 plus the dog.

Nothe Fort looks like a possibility as dogs are welcome - worth a look?

Probably take a wander around Portland as well

It looks like there's a few beaches which are dog friendly too - is that right? Anyone tell me which ones?

40 minutes away so maybe a bit further than you're willing to go, but Tyneham village is a good visit: https://www.visit-dorset.com/things-to-do/tyneham-...

Lulworth and Durdle Door are always worth a visit and not too far from Weymouth. Although I went there for the first time in ages a few weeks back and it was rammed with people. bloody instagram! hehe

Other than that Little Bredy waterfall and West Bay are worth a visit. Although if you've been to the area before you've most likely been to all of these places already.

Bovington Tank Museum. tank

Loads to see from WW1 - WW2 to present day.

I'm biased as SWMBO comes from there, but Dorchester is a decent place especially if you're into Roman ruins.

Definitely Nothe fort. Possibly Sea Life centre (East end of Weymouth promenade).
Definitely Tank museum...
Head north to Yeovil and you've got the Fleet Air Arm museum and Haynes motor museum.

Visited Weymouth often over the past 30 years as my Nan lived there, like most coastal places it's better off season especially if you have a car as there's not much parking and the carpark are often full.
The main beach isn't dog free in tourist season, Newton's cove is pretty decent and not too busy and can probably get away with a dog on lead.
Rossi's ice creams is one of the best in the country imo

Thanks Chaps - some good ideas in there

stayed in Lulworth and did Durdle door last year so probably staying west of there this time.

Little Bredy looks nice, dorchester a good option too as it looks like a few things there of interest - the kids would like the Tutankhamun museum.

I think the boy would like Bovington although we were driving tanks a few weeks ago so may feel a little static unless they let us loose in one hehe I suspect the daughter may get bored though.

Rossi's is on the list now thanks! What's the best fish and chippy in the area?

I've worked out the beaches now that Monty can go on - looks like its Bowleaze cove, abbotsbury or round to Church ope Cove on Portland.

You can take dogs on the pebbly section of the main beach over towards Lodmoor - the water is deeper there though (for good or ill).

Go to Portland and into Tout Quarry, you can easily lose hours in there looking for the sculptures

Lovely views and excellent for a picnic

If going across to the tank museum your kids might enjoy Monkey World more, its only a fewmins from the tank museum

I second Tout Quarry.... was just about to mention that one!

You also have Cerne Abbas Giant a bit further north - but its something to look at on your way....its not really a destination in itself.

There are also quite a few country houses a bit further north... Stourhead near Gillingham (about an hour from Weymouth), Barrington Court nr Ilminster, Montacute House just west of Yeovil.

And of course if you head west towards Charmouth on the coast, you can do some Fossil hunting...

Clouds Hill near Bovington is fascinating. It is Lawrence of Arabia's house. Not what you would expect.
Kimmeridge beach is great for fossil hunting and the Etches collection nearby is great.
You can climb to the top of Portland Bill lighthouse.

Lulworth Cove
Swanage Pier
Portland Bill
Chesil beach
Monkey World

Sure there will be other stuff,m but I have done all of the above adult and child and enjoyed it.

Of course not - what makes you think that?

We’ve booked a couple of things for us already - simply asking from those that know whether there is anything else worth looking at.

There’s a lot of stuff mentioned that I hadn’t found though google etc

Still after a recommendation for the best fish and chips if anyone can help?

Marlborough restaurant in town gets good reviews. But to be honest I haven't had bad fish and chips anywhere in Weymouth.

Also, go to Portland and have a cup of tea at the Heights Hotel. On a clear day you get views like this.

Trip on the paddle steamer, which is surprisingly spritely for an old thing. A nice evening run would be lovely.
