Taking out standard travel insurance for Europe/Ireland do they generally cover the excess that hire companies charge if you end up with a scratch ect where they gouge you for the approx £1000 pre authorization on your credit card.
I've also found this site from the Guardian newspaper reducemyexcess.co.uk that covers purely hire car excess there may be many others, but wouldn't most standard travel insurance also cover this situation. I have a distrust of car hire companies after reading many reviews. Have a car booked with Avis via BA.com

Nope it doesn't, I used insuremyexcess with no issues earlier this year but the hire car company will block €1000 on your CCard.

Avis wanted to block €4000 on my card in Italy last year...and that was for a low life Citroen hired for a week!

Good to know, it's the Avis company that puts me off, it looks like Avis are who BA use as their rental partner, have hired many cars before around the world without problem just the negative feedback Avis generates makes me wary, and The Leapers' Italy £4k card block enforces that.

Just google 'hire car excess insurance' and pay a fraction of the cost. Avis will always try the hard sell, but back off quickly when you tell them you already have insurance.
