On a related tack, when going to the U.S., I almost always use Dollar or Alamo, specifying sometimes luxury, sometimes “full size.”
On arrival at Fort Myers FL, Tampa FL, or Atlanta GA, they check the voucher and drivers licences, then say, “take whatever you like from the rows marked luxury or full size out back.”
If you fancy a Lincoln Town Car, jump in, if a Caddy Escalade, then take that if you went for luxury, full size? Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Chevy Impala, Nissan Maxima.

The last few times I’ve been to Miami and Orlando it’s been like that. It’s strange though as you have a Dodge Charger next to a Ford Focus and you can have either. It seems to be the luck of the draw as to what’s there when you pick up. I was just about to get in a Ford Taurus last time when a Charger got parked up from the cleaning bay, had that instead! On arrival at Fort Myers FL, Tampa FL, or Atlanta GA, they check the voucher and drivers licences, then say, “take whatever you like from the rows marked luxury or full size out back.”

If anyone was waiting in anticipation to find out what I got...Automatic Vauxhall Astra!
Not amazing, but decent enough. Better than a supermini and automatic might be quite handy on wrong side of the road.
I'd pay an extra twenty for anything else. Not amazing, but decent enough. Better than a supermini and automatic might be quite handy on wrong side of the road.

Sadly no haggling for something else as it was dropped off at an hotel...It's decent enough, boggo spec though steelies and all, and can't work out the auto gearbox...if I floor it it just revs to 7000 without building much speed...do they all do that?! First time driving an auto...

Sounds like a CVT transmission, not a traditional auto. Horrible things. It's decent enough, boggo spec though steelies and all, and can't work out the auto gearbox...if I floor it it just revs to 7000 without building much speed...do they all do that?! First time driving an auto...

I’d pay an extra forty to swerve a stick shift, I like my left foot to just relax by the brake pedal.
I like it even more if someone else is driving.
Never had many surprising cars really.
I don't like being given a Nissan Juke, when focus is specified, I don't believe they have as much interior space.
Ended up with a zafira when my work tried to book a supermini. For some reason they had a booking for me but no car type specified and as it was late not much choice. Wouldn't fit in the hotel underground car park frustratingly!

Earlier this month i was in Dubai, id hired a Focused sized car and was greeted with a Toyota Yaris 1.5 auto with nearly 70000kms. That car is not a good car.
I had a fairly new one of those in Italy last year. I was in the mountains. A 1.5l Yaris with CVT wasn't the ideal car for many mountain passes and some snow. It did ok though! Not in keeping with the thread theme but I'm travelling to Florida for 3 weeks next year and I'm hell bent on making sure I get an escalade. I don't know why, but I'm drawn to it lol.
All of the searches I've did with the big companies don't actually let me choose and secure a specific make it model, do I need to go more specialist?

Although I said in my post earlier that Alamo and/or Dollar told me take my pick from the group that I’d paid for, Luxury/ Full Size/ Intermediate, I don’t think that they mention that they do that on their web site. All of the searches I've did with the big companies don't actually let me choose and secure a specific make it model, do I need to go more specialist?

I doubt any of the big companies at the airport's would guarantee you a specific car. They are just not set up for a personal service. It's high volume quick turn over operation.

Hertz Prestige & Fun Collection & Avis Select allow you to reserve a specific model, but you'll have to do it via the US website & CDW & ALI will probably not be included, which adds a lot of cost onto the already very high price.Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
