Believe it or not there is 24 hours between these two photos. Taken back end of Jan 2016.

Well in time honoured fashion, I completely ignored the majority of advise and booked the photographer!

thanks for the tips including those about transport and the air craft carrier.

Keep them coming!

We're planning to do ground zero and the statue of liberty in one day.

First of all is that practical, and what's the best way of getting to both (from the Roosevelt hotel).

Secondly is it worth visiting the statue itself or just seeing if from a ferry tour? My wife just wants to seen it rather then donthe climb to the crown!

We did both in one day. Ground Zero took a lot longer than expected - properly moving stuff. I crumpled when they had the recordings of people on the phone to loved ones on the ground. Was mentally exhausted by the time we left.

Thought about doing the actual liberty island thing, but ended up just doing the (free) out and back on the Staten Island ferry. Don't feel like we missed out and had other things we wanted to do more, but gave a different spespective on the place and got a couple of snaps of the statue in.

Favourite thing we did was a visit to the Brooklyn Brewery - not the world's best brewery tour, but great atmosphere in the bar - They also encourage you to order/bring in food - Vinnie's Pizza for a dustbin lid sized pizza and many, many beers makes for a great evening.

We did a six hour walking tour, went out on the Staten Island Ferry to sail past the Statue, got off and straight back on the ferry, then on to the World Trade Center. We had tickets booked for the One World Observatory which was a good move as the queue was huge. I'm glad I went up, but wouldn't go up again. The view from the Rockerfeller Center is much more iconic I think.

Unless you're going a fair bit into the future the crown access will already be sold out (1st available date is currently Jan 8th) pedestal access is a little easier, off-season you may get that with just a few days notice - I did and it was well worth it.

Access to Liberty Island is only available by ticket, even if you don't want to go up at all - those tickets are best purchased from www.libertycruises.com in advance, you can go from either Manhattan or Jersey and return to either.

If all you want is a photo, then the (free) Staten Island ferry will do just as well as one of the paid-for cruises, but I'd advise actually going up the pedestal if you can, it's well worth it IMHO.

If doing the Staten Island ferry option then you will be able to do both in a day easily, if you actually want to set foot on Liberty then it'll be tight - simply because the ferry timings to Liberty Island are not that great and the 9/11 museum is fascinating and will take you most of the day to see it all properly.

Off to New York next week and I can't wait! Hoping to see the tree get switched on at the Rockerfella the day we arrive, the Mrs has always wanted to go.

We're there for 6 nights, staying near Grand Central Station, we've booked a 4 day attraction pass which looks decent value so might be worth people heading there looking at those because on the face of it they save you a bit of money.

Never been before, super excited!

Yep planning on doing that, we're going back in June so we can mop up anything we can't get done then.

My Mrs is mad for Christmas so I've booked some surprise tickets for the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City for our second night. Christmas overload!!!!

A tip for those who are going at Christmas time
On your first morning in the city you will probably wake up around 3 am due to jet lag, don’t wait about indoors, make your way to the Rockefeller’s Christmas tree.
It’s lit up, still dark until 6.30am ish , and zero crowds , just the odd mug going to work such as myself!
It can also be a good time to look at the store window such as Saks, although the full music display is only on in the evenings.

Thanks all for the advice on the Statue, and the ferry. We just want to see it, and taking the ferry also ticks something else iconic off the list. Will also be good for seeing the skyline.

We'll grab the subway from grand central which goes to the ferry, then after walk to ground zero.

If all you want are the views, when the ferry docks you have to disembark at Staten Island but you can loop round the walk way and get straight back on it to come back.

Bit of a thread bump ... but given British airways have a flight sale on, along with booking a hotel and it seems £1000 will get two of us return flights and a hotel for 3 nights in NYC

Questions

Is it worth booking breakfast in the hotel or better to eat out ?
Any recommendations on hotels (the one on BA was in times square)

We plan on visiting in December because, well because its Christmas

Breakfast in the Waldorf where we stayed (not the best hotel, but very iconic) was relatively cheap so worth booking, but loads of places to eat at any time. Lobster and Champagne bar in Grand Central station for example smile and lots of little cafe's

Make sure you go to Harry's bar in the Waldorf and see the high class, err, 'escorts' with their clients of an evening smile and I think the barman could have someone whacked if you ask nicely.

I can recommend the New Yorker hotel on 8th Avenue where I’ve stayed a couple of times. This is mainly for its location. You don’t get a lot for your money in New York hotels but you really only sleep there anyway as there’s so much to do.

I wouldn’t book/pay for breakfast in the hotel - as already mentioned there are so many interesting places to eat all over the city. If you want a no frills, proper New York breakfast experience (where locals & police officers go), I can recommend the Skylight Diner on west 34th Street. It’s also cheap as chips!

Have a brilliant time!
