Shouldn't need to go anywhere near Genoa for Monaco to Como.
We've driven Monaco to Como regularly & each time we've skirted Genoa on the high level motorway. I shudder now at that thought.
+1 Amazing views but yes, as you say I may think twice after recent events. eek

Como is beautiful. cool

I would be weary with a car that feels as wide as the 4C on the roads around Lake Como.

Amazing trip though. Jealous!
Can you fold the mirrors in? Then it's narrow than the DB9 I took.
"First rule of Italian driving: what's behind you is not important."

I can't resist another opportunity to post this, the only decent photo I have ever taken:

What other tips do I have? Rent a speedboat for a few hours and wring its neck. Non Solo Barche in Cernobbio does them reasonably cheaply. On Como you can drive anything up to 40hp with no licence at all, which makes the rental boats rather fun. Rent it for longer than you think you will want to.

There's a very nice smokehouse/bbq restaurant in Como itself, for when you get sick of eating pasta. The Riva Cafe does very nice pizza, but is popular.

If you stay in a hotel right near the road be prepared for the noise. The lake road is always busy, day or night, and mopeds abound.

Take antihistamines for the inevitable insect bites, as well as putting steroid cream on them.

Bellagio is worth a visit but is very expensive if you plan to stay there.

Como is a short train ride to Milano Centrale, and Monza is en route.

I think this is Maggiore, but we stayed at Como for a while too.

I’ve only ever hired small cars + cycled around Como. Not sure I’ve driven there from southern France (I think we did Nice to Grenoble via north western Italy once and have day tripped from Nice to Florence along the autostrade).

We always stay in Varenna. It’s small, has nice restaurants - my two favourite gelateria - and the ferry is regular. Years ago we did go on a wild goose chase into the mountains in Austria and Switzerland, but we just guessed where we were driving for the day. Should have taken the bike as we went up or near many famous climbs. All in the glamour of a Ford C-Max IIRC.

OP - you’ll have a great time and don’t worry about the roads too much. It’s only really near Bellagio that they’re narrow - they’ll be fine around the rest of the lake IME. You’ll have more of an issue with how potholed they are - but what’s new on Italian roads...!

Take a day trip out to Bergamo as well, though get there early as parking is a bit of a sod.

Number on the door suggests the Healey is on some organised tour.
Just checked the Monaco date,it's the wrong side of the Mille Miglia or I'd have suggested visiting that in Brescia.

Aha!! Hadn’t thought of that. Looks fun nonetheless.

My sister & partner drove down to the show at Villa d’Este earlier this year. Looked stacks of fun. Come to think of it I don’t think he had any issues in the car (Ferrari FF) on the Italian roads.

All great info guys and girls. Keep it coming, especially pics, looks awesome!

A couple of days in and around lake Como doesn't seem enough, might have to stretch that to 3-4 days
