I think I'd have to admit my knowledge of chinese cities isn't great.

30 million seems very misleading, Shanghai, China's biggest city “only has” 20 odd million. My guess would be Xi An on a tributary of the river.

which presumably means it is Chongqing (the 'city' apparently being the size of Austria according to wiki) - I was only checking wiki to get the spelling right - I've actually been there: start of a Yangtse 3 gorges river trip.
