We had an ‘aspect’ van for May/June half term last yr with eurocamp... 2 kids (4 and 7 months) absolutely brilliant!

Space, decking & a dishwasher (fully fitted kitchen too).. highly recommend...
Yep, Aspect has all the home comforts, but they are blooming pricey at peak holiday months!!

Ah yes dishwasher, just don't do a last minute wash, then leave all the girl's spare milk bottles, teat's, cutlery, plates and bowls in the dishwasher.....Wife was not amused!
thumbup that’s my department on holidays, took her 3 days to figure out how I cleaned everything so quick hehe so back to the shop (via the bars on the sea front pushing the baby to go asleep to buy more dishwasher tabs)... every cloud eh!

Thanks Mr Thomo, yes today is the first day I have some breathing room (thankfully just as the RWC starts!).

We had a great time at Domaine de la Breche ("DB") and we really fell in love with the Loire. I will outline pros and cons of the site below, some of the places we went that were good for children (assuming you have them), and anything else I can think of.

The site was very good value compared others in the region and the Vendee but it is technically 4* and we were spoilt the year before at the 5* La Garangoire and it was difficult not to compare. Where DB was not quite as good, the Loire was much nicer and more interesting than the West Coast.

Pros:

- It's a small site - this is personal preference really but compared to some other sites we have been to DB is quite small which made it easy for our children to navigate themselves and we never felt worried about letting them roam. It also meant it was relatively quiet given it was August. There were large open spaces though for games of cricket and for children to meet and run around.

- Loads of stuff to do - pony riding, archery, fishing, cycling, tennis, football, wine tasting, etc etc. My son's highlight was the laser tag game where he and I got to dress up in full camo gear and rifle and run around shooting each other for half an hour - all pretty good value too.

- Good swimming area, although I thought the baby pool was a bit tired. Always busy though but that is the same anywhere at the height of summer so don't plan on any relaxing length swimming! Slides were good fun.

- The attached restaurant La Breche was fantastic and great value for such good food. Think we spent just over €100 for 5 of us to have 3 courses (kids menu was 3 courses too!) plus wine and soft drinks and it was definitely fine dining (see pics below).

- Location - right on the banks of the Loire about 5 min drive from Saumur and everything you need. Great spot to get to various other places too. Don't worry when you pull off the main road and think it looks a bit scruffy!

Cons:

- Not much to do if the weather is crap - it rained all day the first day we were there and we had to find something to do off-site as there is little entertainment for the children (other than the kids club but it was closed that day!). What there is is old and knackered such as table football with cork balls that don't roll, and 80s arcade games that charge €2 for a game that last 3 minutes (my absolute pet hate, why not make them free!!!)

- Being a touch snobbish here but there was a slight whiff of Little Britain around the place, particularly the caravan brigade. 99% of people were very pleasant but we didn't end up meeting any other families to spend time with like we did at La Garangoire.

- The bar area was always pretty dead probably because of the awkward shape of the place which was a cramped long narrow thing. We didn't bother much with the evening entertainment - much nicer to sit out on the deck with a good book and glass of Champigny smile

A word on the Taos Luxe accommodation as you mention it - a very nice standard indeed and the hot-tub was lovely (once it was at the right temp!). Air con was a boon. Downsides we thought were it was style over substance with very little in the way of storage, plus they were located quite close together and not all of them have a view over the lake - we sat in the hot-tub looking at the back of the next unit. You give up any outside space (apart from the deck).

I would recommend heading further back in the site towards the Key West units as they had a much larger footprint - several of them had parents sitting on the deck while their kids playing on the open space out front - we had to make sure our 3 year old didn't jump in the tub or the lake!

Places we went and loved:

- Fortress at Chinon - amazing views and fantastic for kids. They have to complete a trail around all sections of the fortress and get given Histopads which turn the place they are standing into what it would have looked like back in time. Sword-fighting, dressing up, trebuchet firing - just brilliant.

- Le Mystère des Faluns - this was a godsend on the rainy day. Stunning caves, again with clues that the children had to follow to find certain items.

- Chateau du Breze - we chose the chateaus carefully to ensure the children wouldn't get bored and this place delivered. Not particularly spectacular from the outside, it has the largest dry moat in Europe and a huge complex of caves underneath - a fascinating place.

- Lake Municipal at Bourgeoul - this is a quiet campsite which has a swimming lake and beach but you can park for free as a day guest. We thought we had made a mistake when we found it at the back of an industrial estate but it was a lovely little change from the site. No eating facilities though.

- Lac Varennes - thanks to Puggit for this absolute gem and one of the highlights of the trip. A simply wonderful beach lake with a bar and restaurant, huge playground and fantastic swimming lake with slides.

- Chateau d'Isslette - this was our favourite place of the whole holiday, a stunning and quiet place where Rodin and his mistress used to frequent. Games, a boating lake, free dressing up for the kids, animals. Just go there.

We ate very well at Keatings Steak House and Cote du Jardin in Saumur.

We also did our usual stop off in Normandy there and back and had a trip to Utah and Omaha beaches - surreal as ever.

Sorry for the long post! Some pics:

Thank you for taking the time to detail the pro's and con's. I did omit to say in my note that I do have children (6 year old twin girls) so activities to keep them (and us) sane very much required....

It is still high up on the list of possible sites to visit next summer. Have stayed in the EC aspect units and would be looking for something similar. Although these were all out of season so deffo have the school holiday tax applied. Thank you for the recommendation on the Key West units. Will take a look at those.

A quick google of the places you listed to visit are 100% up our street so have bookmarked if you end up in this neck of the woods.

Now to convince MrsThomo and to get booking

Per my earlier review, I recommended the Key West chalet which we stayed in this time (chalet No. 001), located at the back of the site and much quieter due to less foot traffic. We booked the 3 beds/ 2 baths chalet so our girls had a room each (due to their different sleeping habit). Ensuite toilet/shower room was pleasantly roomy so we never used the 2nd shower box room. Kitchen was fully kitted out, Wifi and aircon was a blessing when the late afternoon sun come blasting into the front room. Huge decking/terrace with surrounding play area, but the terrace doesn't have a secured gate which is important if you have toddlers! Unless you want a hot-tub, I feel the Domain's Key West chalets are great value. Only criticism on the Key West chalet is the omission of hooks so we couldn't hang anything! If the Key West chalet are unavailable, I suggest to book via EuroCamp the Aspect chalets which are located at the back next to the archery section. They all have a HUGE surrounding play area outside + gated terrace + quietest location on the site. We stayed in the Aspect chalet booked via Eurocamp at Pin Parasol, and they are imo very similar to the Key West chalet, but with more storage rooms. Only difference is Wifi which isn't included in the Aspect chalet.
So that's another recommendation for the Key West accommodation. Its cheaper than the EC aspect units when booking direct so think this is the route to go if we decide to head here.

I would agree with pretty much everything chip* says - the Taos just were not worth the premium we paid.

We have a big shortlist for next year - anyone been to these?:

Pin Parasol (Vendee)
La Guyonierre (Vendee)
Le Littoral (La Rochelle)
Les Grand Pins (near Bordeaux)
Parc du val de Loire (East Loire)

I've stayed at Les Grand Pins Lacanau a few times.

It's a Yelloh! owned place.

Near enough to Lacanau but it's not a big resort just a few bars and restaurants. Great surfing and cool sunsets from the bars on the front.

The site is set in pine trees on the sand dunes and is pretty good, the facilities were a bit basic when we were last there which was about 10 years ago.

I recall that a full fat mobile home didn't cost much less than the villas with private pools up towards the lake.

Stayed at Le Littoral at the end of August/early September this year. Excellent site, pool complex is fantastic and location is good for nearby attractions, Veillon beach was really nice and a short drive/shuttle bus away. Would recommend the premium locations as they are on a quieter side of the site with more space and better spec, they are the only ones with ovens if that matters to you (4 kids so it did to us!). We're likely back there again next year for longer, it was very quiet for the first few days of September which was good but a little weird. We've also stayed up the coast at Sol A Gogo (Saint Hilaire De Riez) for the last few years which was very different and a more developed area, much smaller but 20 metres from a really good beach.

Just docking at Portsmouth after a long weekend chez nous.

We have a Brexit busting consignment of Loire wine in the boot. Every bottle less than €5 (inc the Cremant du Loire).

It is going to be a huge shock to a lot of people when wine is limited to 4ltrs per person furious

Or, £3.85 duty per extra litre - have not checked the exact amount. We return to UK on 1st November smile

Visited Parc du Val de Loire for a week in 2015, it's a Yelloh! site. Great for the kids, nice pool, entertainment most nights, very good staff.
It's situated between Tours and Blois, near Amboise. Plenty of Châteaux's to visit, and Leonardo da Vinci's place in Amboise is good.

Thread revival to keep the camping post in a single thread for ease of reference.

We initially discussed going to a hotel (all inclusive jobbie somewhere in Greece,Spain, or Cyprus) in 2020, but we feel camping is better suited for our younger kids (3 and nearly 2), so we are seeking campsite recommendations from the PH community. We've visited some great camp sites from previous recommendations (Loire and Vendee regions / Domain De La Breche, La Garangeoire, Pin Parasol), but we are seeking new location/sites. To reduce driving time, we are considering grabbing the ferry to St Malo so we can head further down south.

Ile de Re is our our radar, so we am seeking recommended campsites on this island. We usually do 2 x weekly break for a change of scenery so another nearby site further south would be ideal. Dordogne region is a possible, but maybe it's a tad too far for this trip.

Your campsite recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Note. when I say camping, I really mean glamping i.e. fully fitted chalet/mobile homes smile

We've booked 10 nights at Les Grands Pins in August. Pool and facilities look great, and the site seems to be highly recommended on TripAdvisor. Too far to drive down, so we'll probably fly to Bordeaux and get a hire car from there.

We also strongly considered the Pin Parasol site, which looks very good. I have great memories of family holidays on that stretch of Vendee coastline when I was a kid.

We're booking with Yelloh this year. I've got high hopes for them, after a poor experience with Eurocamp in summer 2017.

Glad the camping thread still has legs!

We actually ended up booking La Garangoire again this year - we are going with friends which will freshen it up. It is such a great site with everything you need, plus the kids fancied the seaside this time.

Will miss the Loire though.

We did a few France Eurocamp / Canvas holidays. We all really enjoyed all of them. Dol de Bretagne was our first and we might have stuck with it if the weather was better.

Brittany - Dol de Bretagne (twice) - 5hrs drive from Calias
Large site with all sorts of facilities, loads of space for older kids to cycle. Live entertainment. Plenty to see and do in the surrounding area.
Alps - Camping de la Serraz - 8 1/2hrs drive from Calais
Small site but has all the main features. Beatiful area with plenty to see and do. Can hire small 10 hp boats by the hour or day on Lake Annecy.
St Tropez - Holiday Marina - 12 hours drive from Calais. Over nighted on a lovely site in the grounds of a Chateau between Dijon and Lyon each way
Small site but really well built. Live entertainment. Lots to see and do in the local area but traffic while out and about can be off putting in peak season if travelling around by car.

And then Italy
Lake Garda - Bella Italia - Flew into Milan Bergamo and picked up a hire car
Large site with eveything I could ask for. On the south shore of the lake and 10 minutes walk into Peschiera del Garda.
During peak season it can be difficult to book as it's very popular. It's also very pricey, however it's great for a September or October break. Our accomodation for the week in the October was 1/10th the price it would be the folowing July...

We stayed on Ile De Re in 2018 with Eurocamp, we were hoping to return last year as we enjoyed it so much but Eurocamp didn't have any sites there last year. Obviously you can book direct with the camp, we stayed at Les ilates which is in Loix. There's a market everyday and the site was great for entertaining 2 & 5 year olds. That plus so much to do and see on the Ile. La Rochelle is well worth a visit too.

Last year we went to Camping Bel in La Tranche Sur Mer, it's a small quiet site but there is loads to do in the town, great beaches etc. We basically parked up, hired bikes and didn't get back in the car till we were driving home.

One of our favourite destinations was Saint Avit Loisirs in the Dordogne, absolutely brilliant site, 10 minute drive from Le Bugue and Limoux.
We've done Domaine De La Breche a couple of times so I understand your expectations and I can't recommend Saint Avit enough! (The food at the site restaurant is almost as good a DDLB's!!) We have also spent a few holidays around the Vendee & Loire regions as we tend to split the trip up by staying at DDLB on the way down and Chambord on the way back. Then it's an easy drive to Caen for the overnight boat.

To put the drive into context, we drive to France every year from Edinburgh! Though this year we are taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao to stay near Biarritz before taking the same route back.

+1 for Saint Avit, visited twice now and have 3 sets of friends who have all visited on a number of occasions, great site, fantastic area and highly recommend. Was very close to booking again this year but we have gone for Péneyrals near Sarlat for a week and Les Alicourts in Loire for 3 nights on the way back home this year. All through Sandaya in Key West accommodation.

I think that's the one my neighbour goes to, it sounds even better than Saint Avit, and he's French so he knows what he's talking about.

We've done Saint Avit twice now, the second time was after the play area next to the bar go extended. Me & the Mrs loved sitting there at night enjoying the Leffe Ruby while the kids tired themselves out beer

Glad we booked - had a couple of recommendations so decided on a change. Last went to St Avit in June 18 during World Cup. Great sitting at the bar having a beer, watching the footie all whilst keeping an eye on the children running themselves ragged in the play area. I am sure we will end up going back at some point.
