We had the same choice. My 8 year decided that the Tahoe was more "Thug Life" than the Suburban. That settled it for us.

Hi all,

I'm going over in July with 5 adults and 2 kids (5&3). Which will equate to probably 5 suitcases and hand luggage....

Will one of the larger SUVs work? Yukon XL for example

I'm also minded that with booster seats for the kids it might impact on who can sit where etc.. will only need the luggage on the way to/from the airport, so dont mind a cramped drive if needed.

When we had a tahoe in san diego we had the 2 - 2 - 3 configuration.

We were with Avis, and had a brand new white tahoe with 8 miles on the clock - the exhaust really did stink for first few miles, loved that car, my daughter cried when we got back to heathrow and picked up my diesel astra (cue astra jokes).

We had option of Tahoe, Ford expedition (?!) and Nissan something or rather.

From my understanding the Tahoe and Suburban are almost the same, the main difference being that the Suburban is longer, so will have more boot space if using the 3rd row of seats, and more leg room for the 3rd row.

In the GMC line, (basically badge engineered from the Chevy line,) this would be the Yukon and Yukon XL, respectively.

In the Cadillac line, (also mainly badge engineered,) this would be the Escalade and Escalade ESV.

(goes off to play with configurators)

We had the Ford equivalent of the Suburban for 5 adults touring round California and Nevada. We were carrying all our luggage each day, because we were touring, the longer version was perfect. If you're not taking all your luggage, and there is a short-arse in the group, the smaller version would be fine.

I hired a full size SUV in SF last year for 4 adults and my 16 year old son. We ended up in a Ford Expedition, the seating was 2-2-3. It didn’t look much but it was the most comfortable car I’ve ever driven, which is just as well as we done 10 hours in it one day. The cabin was more than big enough for all of us, the boot was just big enough for all out bags and it did have to be packed neatly to get everything in. I think the Expedition is related to the F150 pickup and Lincoln Navigator, it measures roughly the same as my Transit Custom van.

It was probably on 65 profile tyres on 18" wheels. Same car in the UK would be on 45 profile 20", and "sports" suspension. Always annoys me that we can't have such quiet and comfortable SUVs here - without going to FFRR price levels.

Having just come back from 3 weeks round California and 2,500 miles - I can thoroughly recommend a GMC Yukon XL. I booked through SIXT direct for about £800 off the airport. Car had done 600 miles when we picked it up and was immaculate. SLT spec so had loads of toys - think aircon seats. rear entertainment (for both rows), sunroof, electric pedals etc. The Yukon XL and the suburban are basically the same truck and the yukon/tahoe being the same just shorter.

Bloody loved it, even though it handled like a boat and wasn't that quick - felt all its 2.5tons. Drove it down some pretty windy roads but it was most at home on the interstates. - very comfy. There was only the two of us so loads of space, never even ventured into the third row. Even with the third row up, the boot was plenty big enough for two large suitcases and a couple of smaller bags. Average of 28 MPG was a surprise too considering it was a 350HP 5.3 V8.

Even though its bigger than a range rover never had a problem with the size, the US is geared up for trucks this size. Would definitely do it again.

Made the MX-5 i came back to feel like a toy.

we normally always go for a Tahoe / Escalade unless unvailable when booking but recently in upstate New York we had an Infiniti QX80 which was equaly as massive and comfy and would recommend it again - even in New York City it wasnt too problematic (other than it didnt fit in the hotel parking garage lift) so they had it on the sidewalk next to the entrance which actually was better for us as it meant we didnt have to call down 45mins beforehand.

We have a Yukon XL booked for our 10days in orlando in a 8weeks time (over 4th July week) and was only £200 with Hertz for this period using AMEX Gold Preferred
