We're going back to Alta Badia in Italy early January, San Cassiano specifaclly which is quite a small town, but really nice.

Can not wait, given our last trip was Morzine which i found to be awful. Way more expensive, awful food, and rubbish apres ski (apart from the one at the bottom of the lift), we don't want any clubbing but just cheaper drinks and free snacks is normally good.

One other to consider is Sauze D'Oulx in Italy, connected to Sestriere and Montegenevre if you've got the legs (has been an Olympics venue). Really good mix of skiing and Sauze is a great village. Accommodation can straddle the weekend (unlike when we've tried to get Austria). We're back for our third trip this January (4 lads). We fly to Milan as the others live in Docklands/Essex so London City is our preferred airport, that's about 2.5 hours but an easy drive. Turin is closer by at least an hour but flight frequencies are lower (and nowt from City). Italy is way cheaper for food/drink in resort than France.
Quite liked Sauze when we went a couple of years ago. We actually stayed in a little place called Jouvenceaux about 5 mins drive away, but it has it's own lift. We stayed in a small family run hotel call Chalet Chez Nous which was absolutely brilliant. Run by brothers who are both ski instructors, really good value accommodation, if you finished up in Sauze after Apres Ski they would come and collect you, drop you back off at the hotel and then get you some take away pizza's for you to eat in the hotel bar. I couldn't recommend the place enough for a traditional little hotel.

Jouvenceaux is a nice little place with a couple of restaurants and a couple of shops. Sauze itself has a good couple of bars for Apres ski such as Ghost Bar. If you like skiing in to another country you can easily get to Montgenevre and back in a day.

We flew in to Turin from Manchester. Really cheap holiday in comparison to the trip to Morzine last year.

I've been to the Dolomites a few times. Downside is its very quiet, little in the way of night life and the snow can be iffy. That said, they've had a great start and the scenery is absolutely 2nd to none. I think the area is the most beautiful of anywhere else in Europe, USA or Canada. Its pretty cost effective as well ... eating, drinking and lift passes are not silly money. I've stayed in Canazei and Selva so only ski'ed around Alta Badia.

Any suggestions for a transfer company? Sofia to Borovets.
Got ours organised last week with GetTransfer.com paid 100Euro return in an Audi A6 (I made sure it was a Quattro smile ). Massive discount compared to the £220 that Balkan Holidays wanted for the 3 of us!
You put in your trip details and they email the offers as people bid for them.
Get the free app Bansko blog (I know it’s Bansko but they arrange transport all over). The chap is called Lance Nelson he moved out there from working in the city a decade ago and has created this enterprise. We’ve used him and others without question his is superior - all vehicles under 3 years old vs one time it must have been at least 20 years old. Drivers all speak full English or can pass you the telephone to talk to an English speaker who can translate. Drivers all adhere to speed limits and safe driving vs a few times crazy pants (and my only solution for that was to keep saying toilet force him to stop again and again) we’ve seen some drivers who don’t wear seatbelts and have a cut off clicker so they put that in to stop the car alarm chiming that seatbelt not done up.
Thanks both - will investigate

Park City, Utah for 2 weeks in March... in the last 15 or so years i've pretty much done European resorts to death, then discovered riding in the states, and the rest is history!

Did Breckenridge/Keystone the season before last for 2 weeks which was ace.

Hey Kenny, long time no see, yes skiing in Feb half term is crazy pricing, the past few years we have gone to Sauze D'oulx, great place, not as busy as the 'usual' resorts, cheaper and more kid frieendly restaurants, as Pizza / pasta is always a winner :-) We normally book an Airbnb and fly to Turin direct with BA, works out at around £500 per head for flight and accomodation.

All the best mate, hope you and the family are well.

Mike
Hey Mike ! Good to hear from you ! We have a crossing booked so I was looking for something drivable so France or Austria. Eilidh is just getting her confidence so don't want to miss a year. I'll have another look this weekend.

All good here. How are you & family doing ? Still ducking and diving ? :-)

Hey Kenny,

Sauze is actually driveable we did it for two years, it’s about the same time as Chambery etc as roads are quieter.

Family are all good mate living in a small village these days, eldest is at 6th form So challenges of a different nature. Wish I could get to more meets but busy times, new job last year which takes up more time, are you still at Motorola?

ducking and diving? Lol not sure what that means 😂

If ever over Gatwick way let me know we are in Cuckfield.

Obergurgl opens tomorrow, its currently snowing heavily with 2.4 metres forecast over the next few days. Hopefully a great start for the season. We'll be back there 12th December ??
Thats our favourite ever resort, me and the Mrs met there and got married 18months later, been a dozen times.
Nederhutte for the best Apres Ski! smile
Nederhutte is indeed great, getting back to the hotel afterwards is always fun. This time next week I should be almost in resort.
Always have a camera handy when leaving the Nederhutte!!!
Comedy gold watching everyone trying to

a - find their skis
b - clip in their skis
c - ski on their skis

Week in-week out all season, just a fantastic place

A mate of mine is in Ottawa, Canada over Christmas and I was thinking of heading out on Dec 29 and meeting him for 10 days of boarding. However, looking into it, it seems the nearest good resort is Mont Tremblant, but the lifts are closed 27 Dec till 2 Jan and it seems to be incredibly expensive. Not many/any options for joining a chalet, hotels are thousands. Unless anyone can suggest otherwise, it seems I could do a very nice 10 days in the Alps for half the money?

Austria. Always Austria. Vorarlberg, specifically, because I've got friends there and it takes the edge off the price.

I've been elsewhere and it didn't have the magic. Not a fan of the Swiss and French places as they're full of people called Hugo waving notes at bar staff. Italy was alright but it was chaotic and it's meant to be a holiday, not an administrative effort. I enjoyed Garmisch but aside from the hilarious signs for Mount wk it was a bit limited.

I'd like to try Norway next, but in the meantime I'm content with Vorarlberg. There's also very few Brits there which means I don't have to overhear gap year stories and loud conversations about hedge funds.

Looks like I'm probably going to go the single route this year - I can be flexible, as in go at the drop of a hat, so will probably wait until the Brexit dust settles, see what the score is and see where the snow is.

Been in Verbier for a couple of days, but today is the first day I’ve got up the mountain. Lovely snow conditions for so early in the season. Sadly going home tomorrow.

Depends where you go... I was shocked to pay CHF 6.50 (a fiver) for a pint on the mountain today. I was more shocked in The Farm on Friday night where I paid CHF 80 for four small bottles of Heineken. So 15 quid a bottle! At the Farinet sports bar watching the match yesterday I think it was CHF 8 for a pint of Blue Moon. Can’t remember how much we paid in other places, but it’ll have been CHF 7-8 or I’d have noticed it was cheap or expensive.

It’s about 5 years since I was here last and prior to that we came 3 or 4 years on the bounce and I don’t think the prices have changed, but the exchange rate will make it seem more expensive.

I live near Zurich, where the beers are more expensive, so it’s actually cheaper to drink in Verbier!

Well that's one week down - and what a great way to start the season!

The snow in Tignes was good at the start of last week, but with a couple of snow days we had a couple of quality powder days too. Anyone out there this week should be in for a treat too, as it started snowing Thursday evening and was still snowing when we left Saturday morning (even if that did mean no skiing for us on the final day). Looking at about 1.5m of the white stuff coming down in the last 7 days (in the shelter of the village it was up to the tops of the mini diggers clearing snow).

Narrowed my options down to Morzine.

At first I thought a late flight in was possible to Geneva but appears the latest is 7:30pm ish from LGW might have to go first thing Thursday - will that be possible to have a full days skiing on the last day but then catch the last plane out home?

Also accomodation for 4 is Airbnb etc good to use? Looking at 23-27th Jan

Should be, yes. Shared transfers (~60Euro return) usually allow 2hr for the drive and 2hr for check-in, so you should be able to ski till 4 and make a 8pm+ flight. The other option is ski/transfer to GVA/airport hotel/first flight of the day/straight to work.

OK can you help me out with this....there are some resorts I've always fancied in the US and Canada (Kicking Horse, Fernie, Breckenridge, Park City) but I can't get my head around flying all that way (with two kids under 8) and then the longish transfer when I can get to Argentiere for some amazing terrain in less than half the time.

Why should I be going across the pond to get my fix (genuine question) ?
