Zell is lovely! The gin bar does a good range of gins (clue in the name really). they've opened some new links around kaprun which should mean less stress on the busses.

Daisy dukes (in town) is a laugh for apres. Schnapps hans at the summit is a laugh too.

In terms of the pistes, they tend to be well groomed. Trass 13 is a long steep black which is fun and leads to a flat blue to get back into town ( less fun on a snowboard). Theres a lovely red (21?) Around the back of the schmitten which leads to a bubble back up.

You guys have me excited now. Also first time flying business so excited for that as well (sorry for the humblebrag). I have only been there is summer so looking forward to the difference between seasons.
Cymatty the conditions are superb and look good for the coming days with snow forecast Friday through to Monday.
First time to Banff, Skied Whistler but tbh they can keep Whistler over this place.
Very friendly folk.
Only skied in and out locations prior and was a bit sceptical but this isn’t a chore as the scenery is stunning.
Spoke to guys that had just returned from Revelstoke and they said it was awesome. 23ft accumulation!!!!! FM
Enjoy LL and Sunshine

Looks like the alps will get a dump today/tomorrow, but then worryingly there could be 4 days of rain for anything below 2000m. Argh.

yes, twice. really nice town by the lake. it’s a proper working town, not just ‘skiing’. well worth a walk down and along the shore of the lake, not sure how frozen it is, wouldn’t venture on the lake on my own!!

but lots of apres places in town, some fairly lively! my top tip for one afternoon is get to the bottom about 3/4pm and get a good seat in the little round tent/ bar at the bottom of the slope and just sit and watch the carnage unfold....... there are 2 runs down to the bottom- a black and a green. the green stops about 50m up the slope from the bottom. so from 3pm onwards you can sit there and watch loads of people stack it on this final steep pitch from the end of the green to the lift station. it’s all deep snow pushed to the bottom of the slope and difficult for beginners to ski down. cue lots of bodies falling over/ getting stuck/ losing skis/ giving up and walking it out

Flights not yet booked as Geneva now seem just as cheap as Lyon.

Which is easiest to get transfers to Meribel and where is best to book up transfers from airports to resort?

My work weekend is next week. Looking forward to it.

Picked up a set of cheap Salomon BBRs today, was struggling to find anything close to what I wanted but I think these will do the trick. Everything is so expensive here, 2 days ski hire at $70 + tax didn't appeal to me.

Les Arcs in two weeks and I'm ludicrously excited. The webcams this morning have me feeling quite frothy inside.

I also bought myself a new toy for Christmas https://getcarv.com/. Not had a chance to get on-piste with it yet but anybody here got first-hand experience of using Carv?

10K is crazy money. Surely any of the package deal companies could do you a week for less than 2k per each, and probably cater it?
Just about to head of to Garmisch; 5 people for 5 days for £5k. That’s flights, hotel, skis and passes. Only need to add transfer from Munich and evening food and wine on top.

Full week 7 days 7 nights.
Half term weeks in Feb you are looking at £2k per person. It’s great flagging off peak season as much cheaper .... we’ll of course it is that’s because it’s not peak season and not half term.

As an experiment change the dates to 15/2 for 7 nights flights accommodation transfer and lift pass for the resort your going to. Please post up the price here so we can see how it changes.

You can DIY for much less than that. Have so far paid for snow-front apartment in Arc 1800, ski passes for 4 and the tunnel; that lot's a smidge over £3500. Fuel & tolls will be around £400. Add food on top and I reckon we'll see change from 5 grand for 4 people for the week. Even then, the biggest expense by far is the apartment and you could easily knock a grand or more off by going to a smaller resort or less well-located accommodation.

Sure it's expensive, but you definitely don't need to spend 2 grand per person.

No but I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

For all manner of reasons it looks very much like my season will consist of the Dec trip and another at the end of the season and nothing else in between. I thought I was going to be OK with that but I'm getting twitchy again!

Zell am See is a great town. I’ve been once before and flying out there tomorrow morning for 3 days on the slopes (and to a lesser degree, on the lash).

I can’t tell you much about the piste area as I’ve only ever been an intermediate level snowboarder and just tend to stick to the red runs to enjoy some nice long runs and manageable jumps with minimal serious injury potential! The ski area is more than enough for the likes of me for a long weekend though.

Last time the slopes were a bit icy, but they’ve had 3 small snowfalls this week and when I checked yesterday the forecast was for 35cm fresh snow by next Tuesday so hopefully some slightly more forgiving conditions.

I’d forgotten about that. That’s great tip. It does get chaotic at the end of that slope, and the little bar at the bottom is a great place to see everyone getting in a tangle. Tomorrow apparently they have a small area of floodlit skiing in the evening? I don’t know but a mate who goes to Zell every year mentioned it’s worth a look.

Just leaving Chamonix, been great conditions last two days and sunnier early in the week. Deep powder galore!

On the downside 6 skiers were caught next to us (about 200m away) yesterday in an avalanche in les Houches. One guy severely injured.

Geneva has more options I think. I looked at flying into Lyon a day earlier to have a wander round and a bit of food, but transfers were more expensive. I used Three Valley Vans last year, and have booked again for March.

You're going for a long weekend aren't you?

Have you looked at a map?

GVA - PdS, approx 50 mins

LYS - PdS, approx 3 hours

We are driving to the Alps in a couple of weeks due to cost of flights.

I got prices from Bham to Grenoble for the 4 of us including transfers was over £500 per head.
