Now thats what I call lucky. Its hard enough to located someone with a transceiver when you can see where they went in, but to get a lift back up and figure it out like this is unheard of.

Jesus. The first 20 seconds of that is possibly the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.

The first 20 seconds of this one are fine. Still makes a good lesson in why it's always worth having a local guide when going off piste - https://www.facebook.com/Paradiskifreeridecommunit...

Not sure if what the guy 'says' at the end say it's a fake video or just how amazing a huge shot of adrenaline is (for a short time).

I think the point is that they didn't really go "off piste" just crossed a small gulley between pistes. If that kid hadn't been carrying a transceiver his chances of this outcome would have been greatly reduced.

Both my kids always carry full avalanche gear and know how to use it. Although we mainly ski off piste, even when on and around pistes and other people, I wouldn't want them skiing without it for the exact reasons highlighted in this video

As the pisteurs in the video makes quite clear, there's only "on piste" and "off piste" and if you're not on a piste, you're off piste.

Personally I'd say things actually went wrong when they looked at a narrow gulley and decided it was OK to ski. To me narrow gulley probably means stream and probably means an area to avoid.

The kid also fell into a hole then seemed to have been covered by snow

This is one of the things I like about skiing in Canada where runs are much more open and pretty much the entire mountain is classed as the piste. They even show popular shortcuts through the trees on the map and if you want to go mad and tackle vertical drops between rocks look for double blacks.

However I do agree an unskied gulley was pushing the boundaries, I always figure if the locals don't venture somewhere there is good reason.

For something closer to home, Scotland has amazing conditions at the moment. It's snowing often and there is a lot of fresh powder to play with, especially if you can go during the week. Doesn't matter which area, all have had a good dump. Only problem is the wind, but the best snow conditions I've seen up there in a while.

Looks like a 'massive' dumping of snow forecast for France starting from tomorrow for 4-5 days

I still don’t understand why people ski off piste. All they are doing is putting themselves and their rescuers in danger. There is plenty of piste available which they’re paying for, just use that.

I don’t really understand why people drive on a race tracks. There’s plenty of regular road available which they’re paying for.

I feel exactly like that about people who walk across fields - there are plenty of pavements available.....

Im guessing you haven't or don't ski off-piste.

Its hard to put into words really but the feeling you can get by going somewhere untouched and away from the crowds can be amazing.

Going down a run thats crowded of any colour is not my idea of fun and it just gets frustrating.

Or youre just trolling

That's like asking why people prefer to swim in the sea when there are perfectly good swimming pools available.

OK, so not a perfect analogy, but you get my meaning. Skiing different terrain with different types of snow creates a different challenge and gives a different experience. Plus you get to experience the beauty of the mountains in relative peace and quiet vs pistes which can at times be feel closer to a zoo during peak times.

I am not trolling.

I don’t ski off piste, I tend to use blades anyway which are certainly not good off piste.

It just seems to be that all the incidents and accidents that we ever hear about involve off piste and people taking silly risks.

You use blades. Your opinion is therefore irrelevant.

I have an ankle full of metal which causes me great pain when catching an edge or misstepping on long skis. The chances of this are greatly reduced by using something short like blades and means I can still ski.

I am however glad to learn this reduces the value of my opinion and shall immediately give up skiing forever so as not to offend you.
