Will anyone charter out something >60ft mono bareboat?
64 footer? https://gmm-yachting.com/en/yacht-charter-turkey-j...

It doesn't say whether a skipper is compulsory and perhaps the Turks are desparate and would do a deal.

(also for sale......)

(stumbled upon it looking for booking our 2024 boat)

The weather this October in the Ionian has been superb. High 20's during the day, warm waters and good weather.

Just coming to the end of a weeks sailing with my two sons (15 and 13). It's been fantastic and so quiet everywhere which is a rarity these days.

In Vathi on Ithica at the moment for the Oxi day parade this morning, then heading up to Corfu.

Perfect training weather for my lads and the older one is parking the boat really well now. The younger one is a superb crew member, anticipating exactly what needs to be done without asking.

I've had the very best time with my two boys. Great holidays for bringing out the best in people.

That would very much do right now - and envious of the passing down of skills you are doing too.

Ahoy there.

Anyone down for 2024 yet?
We've had another couple ask too many times to join us in the past to ignore, and one of my biking besties is keen to return to the water, so a Bavaria 50 Style out of Gocek is booked for us in June.
Should be sufficient comfortable for those unaccustomed and I have given plenty of warning pre-booking that we will not be in natty gear stepping ashore in posh frocks at marinas for those bling restaurants everyone envisages that sailing entails (Portals, Palma, Hvar etc)

Does anyone know of charter companies in the Caribbean where I can book direct, every search I do keeps coming up with agents who obviously take a big cut, Preferably in Saint Martin or The BVI. I would be also keen to find a direct charter with an owner or a swap for a week in my boat.

Heading North to finally enjoy the Western and Summer Isles, and possibly, beyond.

May have left it too late, given my age and health, but we'll see how it goes?

A Vancouver 34P should be the right boat, eh? At least it has a full set of mosquito screens!

I'm very interested in taking my family of 4 off for a week learning to sail after my son's GCSEs - so last week of June/first week of July.

We are in WGC/Hertfordshire. I sailed Prindle catamarans in the late 70s, the rest have no sailing experience whatsoever.

Any suggestions?

Yachts or the small stuff? UK or abroad?

Dingys will give you a better feel for sail trim and boat balance, the skills are transferable into yachts. Yachting will be dryer and will bring navigation into play. Both will be more pleasant in the Med than the UK.

Most important thing to look for in a school is RYA qualification. Also if going for a med based beach club check if tuition is included in the price or extra.

If you enjoyed sailing Prindles and want more of the same I would recommend looking at Wildwind in Vassilki, not the cheapest or the best accommodation but the kit is top notch and well maintained plus you can get to go out in strong winds with an instructor. If any of the family are not into sailing they have the option of yoga on the same site or windsurfing next door.

Not disagreeing and a similar solution, with the advantage of access to bigger boats (modern day standard, they are old school tired and cramped yachts) is the nearby Neilson set up of Vounaki.
Day sail dinghy’s, learn ‘boat stuff’ come away with certificates

We’ve enjoyed Neilson lots, but not taken their yachts - as rather primitive for a ‘holiday’ imho

Sorry should have said - small stuff, so dingys, and UK - it's to give a grounding in sailing. Doesn't have to be residential, can stay in a local hotel if necessary.

Well Neilson is still a great way to learn biggrin as is Vassiliki !

UK based, I’m less aware of the numerous classes on the south coast.

In there the ‘Dinghy Show’ about this time of year ? One would assume the organisations would be exhibiting there

Failing that - RYA website

Fairly big year for me.

Big delivery trip in June… Jenneau 45 set up for gentlemen’s cruising… 2 weeks doing Cartegena to Sicily via Balearics, Corsica and Sardinia… owner may want to spend a 3rd week in Puglia, finishing in Corfu. I won’t be able to do all of it, but will do as much as possible.

Then have another delivery from Lagos to Palma in early/mid July… were doing the Rolex Kings Cup at the end of the month. This is the Benateau 45 we’ve done a couple of Fastnets on as well as numerous shorter off shore stuff. It’s a great boat in race trim.

Quite executed as haven’t done any proper racing for a few years.

Planning on booking again with Nisos for this year (hoping Alfabeat can do us a deal so we can do two weeks! smile )

Had an epic time with the family in the Ionian last year; thanks for the recommendation!

Sorry for my crappy photography skills!

Well I’ve managed to book a 6 cabin cat in Croatia for a week in September, directly with the operator (rather than a broker). So far so good.

We keep our boat on the Scottish West coast, she'll be going on her mooring this week for the season. Handy as we can almost see it out the window 😃

Quite tempted with a charter in the med this year so will have a read through to get some ideas. A couple of friends have boats that they charter out too.

Some of these sailing holidays you guys have posted look amazing! So for someone who has zero experience of sailing, where would you start with the end goal of being able to hire and sail one of these magnificent boats? I also assume its better to do it with a couple of families as it looks like it needs a few hands on deck

To sail a boat comfortably for a holiday you need at least 2 people on board who really know what they’re doing. If it’s just one, that person ends up doing a lot of work and not having much of a holiday.

Kids aged 7-15ish can get started learning various crewing skills.

Start by doing the RYA Day Skipper courses (1 week). For a first holiday, pick somewhere easy (the Ionian) with a heavy support package - a flotilla is generally best.

On a flotilla the ports are all known, you’ll get a daily briefing on the passage that day, and when you get in there’ll be someone waiting to help guide you and get you parked up.

When you’ve done that a few times and feel confident enough then go bareboat (where you basically pick up the keys to the boat at the start of the week, then off you go).

Neilson Holidays in Ionian also do some basics to get you going, shore based or afloat. Some pretty crude / hot / less glamorous boats - so I’d pick off season, but that’s a decent intro to the world.
