There are many problems in Blackpool, mostly to do with local deprivation and a tourist industry which operates at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder, but I'm not sure that I'd call it "unsanitary".
When I ran along the prom early on a Sunday there was piss and st leaking from a set of toilets and piss and puke all over the place. It stank.

Probably safe if they spend the entire time at the top of the Tower.
You must be joking, there's lions up there!!
Well, if the local lions have to go up there it doesn't say much for the conditions elsewhere in the town !

North Euston? If its not the Euston then goodluck, actually if it is... Goodluck.

I went to the nautical college, 25 years ago, met and married a Fleetwood girl.

Goodluck to your lad, it's not as bad as it was 20 years ago but by the sounds of things he's in for a culture shock.
What class were you in?
I was there 92-95

The sorry tale of Charlene Downes pretty much sums up Blackpool for me.

That is a tragic story, but to be fair to Blackpool it started in the West Midlands and could have ended there too.

Went in the late 80's and early 90's to look at the illuminations, we loved it as kids but were obviously pretty naive.

Leaking toilets are grim, but piss and puke are par for the course in any town centre where heavy drinking happens.

Usually the pigeons eat it all up.

Possibly. Paige Cheever’s story ended in Blackpool too however.

That's where Alan Bradley met his demise too if I remember rightly.

It's Paige Chivers

Her murder was at the hands of a right wing wannabee nutter. Her upbringing was also chaotic.

The problem wit the Charlene Downes story is that just about everyone involved comes out of it looking tarnished.
Her parents - truly awful
The police investigation - crap

There was a TV programme I think spread out over 2 or 3 episodes with an investigative reporter. One of the most surprising parts was that the reporter involved another young woman in the proceedings. The woman involved is a complete liar and the fact the reporter didnt twig he was being led on amazed me

I apologise for my error. I know the TV documentary with the "investigative" reporter who made it. Someone else on PH knew the woman who you're talking about (councillor's adopted daughter?)and said exactly the same thing.

Mrs DS often gets asked if she is actually a tranny when she goes in there, since she's 6'3" and about 6'7" in heels.

I spent 15 years policing Blackpool before I transferred away.

It was a sthole. I’m still in contact with a few former colleagues and I have had to go back there once or twice on enquiries in the least few years. It’s still a sthole.

Blackpool, home of the 'GR8' Hotel.

Maybe they couldn't use the word 'Great' as it would have been against advertising standards.

I had the t-shirt ripped from my back by a baying hen party group there and thankfully it is the only place I had witnessed a person gaffer taped naked to a wheelchair as his mates forcibly poured drinks down a funnel into his mouth.

At least you must have been there at a quiet time, it can get a lot worse.

So sad to see what should be a thriving and famous seaside resort slide so heavily into oblivion.
