Blackpool - I probably wouldn't recommend it
Discussion
A few years ago I needed to pick up some Elan Parts from Blackburn, we were flying into Manchester on the Saturday morning before the may bank holiday from Asia, decided that the M6/M5 was out of the question on bank holiday weekend so we would stay by the N pier for the weekend. The hotel was hosting the 50 year reunion of a British regiment engaged in Borneo for the the Malay Emergency, we live in Malaysia, I worked in Borneo and my wife is Indonesian, we had a great time with the old soldiers taking about places they saw 50 years before. Saturday night we went to the Tower theater to see a Brian May production of Escape from the Forbidden Planet, whisky in the bar before hand and in the interval, Sunday we went to Fleet-wood Market on the tram,
OK it was a bit fish and chips and sausage rolls, but my wife had never seen that before, no one hassled us, lots of drunk stag does that we just ignored, my wife loved walking on the pier, I'm retired so not kids, and most of our holidays are at the more sophisticated arty end of the market but we had a great time in. Tuesday we drove to stay on a friends farm on Dartmoor, previous trips my wife had done London, Lakes, Highlands, Yorkshire etc so made a change.

I used to live in Blackpool, moved back to Birmingham 2 years ago.
Absolutely hated the place, if you think it's bad for tourists, try living there!
They invest all the money into tourism and even the tourists have a naff time. But living there you just know that the town couldn't care less about you...
Seeing how Blackpool operates is just depressing and grim. It truly is nothing more than a disgusting slum.

My wife and I went up there about 6 years ago to celebrate our wedding anniversary , there were a lot of kids wearing hoodies that would constantly ride around you on push bikes in large gangs.
We went for our anniversary meal came out of the restaurant and within 20 seconds one of these scrotes rode by snatched her handbag and rode off at pace.
They had her spending money bank cards etc.
There was cctv everywhere that caught the incident. Police weren't interested even after viewing the footage. Land lady said it happened all the time.
We came home following morning wife cried all evening as so upset.
We will never return to the place.

Whilst it must have been very upsetting, that could have happened in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Barcelona, anywhere...We went for our anniversary meal came out of the restaurant and within 20 seconds one of these scrotes rode by snatched her handbag and rode off at pace.

I've always liked Blackpool to be fair, I liked going as a kid to see the lights and I celebrated my 21st Birthday there. I've been on a few stag weekends there and I used to go on lads weekends there too.
I took my kids there a couple of years ago and we had a lovely weekend and it has something for everyone for me. I like Skegness too though so maybe my expectations aren't that high!

I used to go to Blackpool as a kid in the 50's and it was a great place, heaving with tourists, you literally couldn't see the sand for deck chairs.
Then, in the mid sixties, cheap package holidays to Spain for £30 hit all seaside towns hard.
Blackpool is OK on a lovely Summers day, The Pleasure Beach has some good rides, but on a miserable wet windswept day it is hell on earth, especially in Winter.
It has a big homeless and drug problem, once you go inland from the prom a few streets, but it's no worse than many other places.
The illuminations are worth seeing in Autumn, if you have never seen them.
We used to go in the 70’s (family trips and school trips) and loved it. On a hot summer’s day it’s still great walking along the Prom and the kids love the Pleasure Beach. Fish & Chips are also great. Admittedly if you go a few streets back from the Prom it becomes a but too full of flinty-eyed locals looking at you suspiciously. Then, in the mid sixties, cheap package holidays to Spain for £30 hit all seaside towns hard.

TL:DR It’s still great for day trips on summer days. Just keep a can of pepper spray handy.
