I’d completely disagree with the original poster.

First visit to Blackpool in over 20 years, this time with my own family as opposed to my parents and sisters last time.

Stayed in the hotel pretty much attached to the theme park. Lovely hotel with great rooms. Walked along the promenade with both kids (2 & 5) first afternoon and no issues. As you’d expect, stalls selling ice cream and rock. The pier was fine for the kids, no undesirables. Couple of drinks in the local Wetherspoons which was family friendly and busy.

First full day of the holiday spent in the theme park, great day out and loved the rides. Went for a meal on leaving then back to the hotel. Again, no issues or undesirables.

Last day, walked from the hotel right the way along to mid pier and the tower. Lovely day and the promenade full of families and couples enjoying the good weather. Spot of lunch then back to the car and drive up the road. Again no undesireables.

If I went looking off the main streets, of course I’d find something shady. Show me a town though that you wouldn’t! To be fair, if you’re on a stag do or similar, you’re naturally going to find that. I was in Barcelona 2 years ago on a stag and that was the depth of depravity at times but I bet you don’t find many people claiming the same as per original poster.

Would I recommend Blackpool? Yes. Was I surprised at how good it was? Yes. Is it the perfect destination? No. However if you don’t go looking for problems, you won’t find it.

I don't think anyone has suggested that there's anything wrong with the prom, or the piers, or Pleasure Beach etc. It really is everything else, just 1-2 roads inland/the town area itself.

Apart from seemingly being unable to move for druggies, pissheads or scroats?

I was out in Blackpool on Friday night with some old work colleagues, it’s punk weekend, great atmosphere, even one or two streets back from the prom.... I go out in Blackpool 2 or 3 times a year and have done for over 20 years, likewise I go out in Preston, Manchester and even London when I’m working down there. From the content of this thread it sounds like I’ve been very lucky not to have been attacked/beaten up/mugged many times, but strangely I’ve not...

Blackpool is an easy target, it has its fair share of social problems (like many towns) and seems to sum up the north/south economic divide, but it’s like watching a Sunday league match and then complaining it’s not premier league standard. Some of the suggestions in this thread have been pretty harsh imho, even though I get where they are coming from, they are just completely over exaggerated and quite sad. Personally, I see more druggies and trouble in Manchester on a night out than I do in Blackpool.

Despite living near Blackpool, I would rather holiday elsewhere like the lakes or further afield, but that’s because I seek peace and tranquility (and warm weather!) on holiday which Blackpool certainly doesn’t give!

IT'S fkED
It's run by a council who are totally fking clueless
It's one massive roundabout of road works. streets are laid then dug up
Talbot Road is currently being redone. It was only done last year they are placing tram tracks down as some numb nut councillors think a tram link to the railway station will be of great benefit
the tram tracks were duly laid - took over a year but hey ho.
then a few months afterwards they realised something. In the parts where trams would pass each other there wasn't enough of a gap to allow them to pass safely as in gap between. The tts doing the job hadn't done their job properly and the council oversee guys hadn't done theirs

3 years back another part of the town centre was altered to allow bus bays it toom 6 or so months. Now they have decided to redo the whole stretch again and its being done peak time.
The guy in overall charge of the highways is a total fkwit called Fred Jackson. Totally hopeless. He ordered an installed at a cost of several thousand quid some signs to advise of a diversion then decided not to instigate the diversion. The ex leader of the Labour Party a guy called Ivan Taylor is still looked at in fear by other Labour councillors. What Ivan wants Ivan gets. This guy spent thousands on large signs installed in local parks the same parks where they can't cut the grass because of "the cuts". The signs said the area was a no smoking area. Except it wasn't it was totally unenforceable.

Ivan used to have the education brief and lectured everyone and everybody about the importance of kids being in school. Very noble except that his own grandchild wasn't in school she had an attendance rate of four that's 4 !!! percent. Talking of his grandchild lovely woman she got done for approaching old guys in the street hugging them and then robbing their wallets. Lovely woman appeared in the recent Channel 5 documentary about the disappearance of Charlene Downes. Got paid for the appearance as she was a friend of Charlene's except she wasn't non of Charlene's mates knew her. Lovely woman.
In between the documentary being filmed and being broadcast she stole a young as in under 10 year olds lads mobile phone. She robbed it from a shop on Talbot Road. She was back in that area as she was staying at her grandparents - Taylors place round the corner.
When the documentary came out even they - Taylors had to do something as the granddaughter claimed she has been sold for sex at 12 by her Mum.
Lovely woman.

An enterprising buyilder had the idea of converting empty run down as in completely vacant vandalised boarded up roof with holes in them hotels into flats. Not ste hole flats proper modern places. Hoop after hoop to jump through.
Another company did the same with the old Gas showroom on Church Street took nearly 2 years for the plans to get through because well it's retail except it had been empty 2 years and was a bar before.

Lovely place lovely council its fked

Lovely place lovely councillors in it for themselves place is fked

It's council is the most inept hopeless and probably corrupt in the UK.

You've missed a bit. Those tram tracks still don't reach the railway station as the council failed to acquire a building (Wilkos ??) that is in the way.

Confirms my thoughts about councils and councillors in general , it’s very easy to spend someone else’s money.

No no, I was. Just to be clear, the prom was awash with drunks, addicts and feral kids looking to pick your pocket. The toilets were overflowing with st, which was then running across the prom. The piers I went on were run down, stacked with geezers alternately hawking their stalls and chatting up 14 year old girls. There was some dodgy pick-up blasting dance music up and down the prom while his poor <10 year old daughter was looking miserable and getting slowly deafer. This was midday.

I can't speak for the Pleasure Beach because I didn't go, but I imagine the 300 yards and (mainly) the entrance fee will make all the difference

My local council have been bleating on a about cuts and a lack of money for years now. It's so bad, apparently, that they can't afford to fix a pavement at the other end of town, leaving people who want to walk into town no choice but to walk down a 60mph road.

A few weeks ago though, as if out of the blue, they found a million pounds to add to the cost of a really, really badly designed 'relief' road, that has no middle section. Just two ends.

Go on to TripAdvisor and find The Royal Vincent hotel.

I have no idea how that level of filth and safety issues has managed to stay open.

A mate booked it for a group of us and it was unbelievable.

Anything above 1 star has to be a fake review.
Only 70% of the reviews on there are reliable.

they do have Wilkinsons (Wilko) and have a diary plan for the demolition
But it will no doubt take them months.

I did forget to mention the other top plans they came up with. They bought the old Devonshire Road Hospital site and laid a nice car park even put in some of those well thought out gradient assessed wheelchair ramps. It was for the use of the council staff as various council offices were merged into the Town Centre building.
Obviously council staff would be happy to park in this subsidised car park and be happy to walk the thousand or so yards up to the offices
except they didn't they continued to fill all the small streets they could with their cars. or they put the cars in Howard Plants Car park in Caunce Street because well it was cheaper.
So it was never used though one day it did get I think 30 vehicles in it.
so they discreetly abandoned that idea.

It might have been a good idea if they'd sorted out the Wilko building well before the tram tracks got to the front door (many months ago) and then had to stop. Presumably, the contractors have gone off to do other work, the tram line extension is still not open and, in all probability, it will still be many more months before it all gets finalised.

Blackpool has been designated as one of the towns set to receive a share of cash to help the High Streets

https://inews.co.uk/news/uk/boris-johnson-jeremy-c...

My worry is that the council will just fritter it away on completely ludicrous ideas,
A while ago they spent £100,000 on TEN trees being installed on Cookson Street

I don't understand why people are comparing Blackpool with Southport.

Although Southport has its problems, compared to most Northern, Victorian built seaside towns it's OK.

Blackpool though ? It doesn't get any grimmer.

What would improve it ? Detonating a small thermonuclear device right in the middle of it. Probably.

Simple. Let him wipe the st hole of Blackpool off the map, and we get to stay rich in the South East!

I’d offer him plenty of other towns and cities as well!

I don’t think many can relate Southport to Blackpool.
I probably drive to Southport once every week or two as it’s only a 20 minute drive.
Blackpool once every few months, so I’ve been to both tens of times.

Southport is pleasant to walk around and obviously the promenade isn’t as close to the town centre as Blackpool’s prom and town centre but the people visit both places aren’t comparable.

A lot of people that you’d think are on benefits are common in Blackpool. A lot of Asian people too where as not many Asian people visit Southport. Just my gathering.

Maybe the train connections have something to do with it.
Burnley, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester are all direct to Blackpool whereas as it’s Manchester Wigan and Merseyrail that are direct to Southport.

Both places have some amazing houses located nearby. I got stuck with road traffic yesterday and had to go through Formby via where Steven Gerrard lives, some unbelievable houses.
Same with Blackpool near the Zoo.
