Anyone know how this works if you've booked using Avios points? Do you simply get the points back and have to pay for replacement flights with another carrier yourself?
My original booking was with Avios. What they did in the end was they did not refund my BA booking, and just paid the full cash amount for my new flight booking. This means I have paid only the original BA avios and tax amounts.
Thanks that makes sense to me, was it with a different airline or BA on a different day?

My alternative was with Swiss and was to and from different airports than the BA flight. I booked it myself following being unable to contact BA at the time and their onsite re-booking not working. My BA flight was 2 pax in business (paid using points + tax) but I booked in Swiss economy initially, and when I later got through to BA (~10 days later) I confirmed they would cover the cost and on an equivalent cabin basis, so I paid to upgrade the Swiss flights at the airport.

Thanks, that's great information.

... of course no sooner had I got that sorted for my cancelled flight on the 8th, then I get through the notification that my flight for another trip on the 27th is cancelled!

At least this time I got through to the phone line and rebooked for the following day... still to be confirmed if that one they'll cover my extra night in a hotel and extended car hire... they said that despite cancelling the flights on the 27th, they had not yet released internally to their call centres what the compensation policy is.
