Isn't the problem that you're wearing the mask and someone else coughs or sneezes and that ends up on the mask that you're breathing through?

Unless the mask is N95 or better I'd have thought you could just be prolonging the exposure as you draw air through the contaminated mask?

The masks are not vital, but are good for:

1) If YOU have a cold / cough - it makes everyone else far more relaxed!
2) If someone near you on plane/train/bus is coughing and sneezing without covering their mouth - which sadly, is very common in SE Asia, and the Middle East (all the people on the plane from Doha / Muscat to BKK!). The TV quacks keep saying they don't stop viruses, but at the same time, they also keep saying they suspect Corona is spread by droplets (spit/mucus) - which masks DO stop.....
3) When transiting at airports you really don't want to touch things, like hand rails, door handles, grab handles etc and then touch yoru mouth, nose or eyes. Wearing the mask stops you doing the first two, and then that's enough to jolt you into not doing the third. Otherwise, it's very easy to forget.

The masks are in 7-11 as said. They cost bugger all too.
Great thanks. It's more that I don't want to look like the odd one out if everyone else is wearing one. I know they have limited use.

Edit - I ended up getting a 2 pack of these - https://www.screwfix.com/p/moulded-valved-masks-p3...

Chiang Rai, Golden Triangle, Phayao, Lampang, Sukhothai- no Coronavirus hysteria here. Everywhere is blissfully free from tourists though.

Without wanting to detract from or begin another doom and gloom coronavirus thread as per NPE... I have been planning a trip to Asia for a while, specifically Hong Kong for a few nights then on to Bangkok and down to the eastern Islands (Phangan/Tao for a spot of partying, diving, chilling etc) for a few weeks.

I was going to book for March, but am now looking at end of April.

Flights and top notch accommo seem to be at rock bottom at the moment, much less than when I was looking over Christmas.

Famous last words, but I'm of the opinion that this is a bit of a storm in a tea cup and whilst very very serious.... so was SARS, and Swine Flu a decade ago. And normal Flu every year. I can't help thinking the Media is creating a much worse situation and sentiment.

What are everyone's thoughts of getting it booked?

Crack on and go for it.

I’ve got a lot of work travel coming, with Bangkok on 7th March for few days before going on to Tokyo on 15th. I fly back to UK on 20th and then go to S Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe for 12 days on 28th March, followed by Kuala Lumpur on 18th April for a week or so.

I take the view that I’ll use appropriate caution but, really, just crack in as normal (I normally wear a surgical mask in densely populated areas (metro / mrt etc)

It's also a lot cheaper in April as you are heading towards the rainy season. Still mostly fine, I've done it.

We got back last week and both went down with stinking colds/flu like. 2 days after getting back. Headaches, no fever for her (I had hot and cold flushes), dry cough for her, both felt like crap (still do) so thought it best to get tested. Waiting for our results which should be back today but the hospital said they are seeing baout 6 people a day and ALL have been negative so far (Somerset large town). Were met by a nurse in hazmat suit and doctor chatted via a phone from the room next door :-)

Fairly sure we cought colds on the tube when we got back - every bugger was sniffing, coughing and dribling. I don't miss London for that.

To give you an idea of how quiet things are, here is Angkor Watt in "Peak Season" a few weeks ago.

Was Siem Reap busy or quiet?

If you can, Angkor during the rainy season is wonderful biggrin

SR was fairly lively. We mostly avoided pub street but used the near by roads etc. Pub street has turned into a monster!

The tuk tuk drivers were all lined up, complaining there were nowhere near enough tourists.

Above - yeuch! - was what we were expecting as I've been there around 12 years ago, before the "invasion".

I've got a video of Ta Prohm at 7.30 am and we are totally alone, and all you can hear are the birds and jungle noises.

Just came back from Bangkok after flying over on 30th Jan. I avoided the obvious tourists spots and public transport as I had a friend to drive me around most of the time. Other times when I'm in a taxi / baht bus / shopping malls, I would wear a mask.

Other than that I think it was ok, Suvarnabhumi airport was pretty quiet though but that's expected with a lack of tourists from China.

I'm in Bangkok at the moment. My second week of working here and I have got a bad cold so kinda confined to my hotel room. If I sneeze on public transport i expect to be carried off by men in hazmat suits.

About 1/2 of the people in public are wearing masks but otherwise everything is carrying on as normal.
