Most resorts don't open till around 15th of December or later. They have historically been pretty set in stone around closure dates too. I very much doubt they'll extend the season.

Let’s hope this is all resolved or controlled soon.

That aside and the hope for good snow / what can resorts do to extend their seasons way beyond their usual close? Some close whilst there is plenty of snow but volume of people are low so is May skiing possible in Europe?
Central / Northern Sweden resorts are often open through April.

Whistler has skiing into May. Do a dual-sport day, ski in the morning and bike in the afternoon.

I'm not convinced travel into North America is going to be possible next spring.

Very much depends on how the next few days (and weeks) go in the US.

I wouldn’t be confident enough to book anything now as Europe has effectively gone into lockdown again and even when it opens up again, staying open isn’t guaranteed.
On another point, even if the slopes do open this year, will it be worth it as the wait for the socially distanced lifts are going to be long.

We usually book in August for early the following year.
No chance of me booking anything until maybe a few days before a possible departure now.
It really is a "wait and see" matter.

Well that's screwed my ideas of an early trip to Obergurgl. I'll have to cancel the flights and hire car later. As soon as the lockdown is lifted I'll be booking a Crystal package deal for the following week. Fingers crossed the whole season isn't written off.

Quite. Canada has a tough decision right now, whether they can open up to other countries and not the US. That might be an easier decision (fewer repercussions) with a change in US government.

I'm not saying Canada SHOULD let UK citizens in, not with our current numbers. But it could become feasible before the end of the ski season which is half a year away.

Aren't Canada already open to some countries but not the US (or UK)?

Doesn’t appear so.

Ah, so similar to our lockdown at the moment, travel to and from for non-essential reasons is prohibited.

We have a chalet booked in Samoens for half term (booking made in Feb pre-lockdowns). Normally the balancing payment is due -8 weeks which would have given us a mid-Dec decision point but when I checked it just now on VRBO, they've extended it out to just -1 week. Looks like they're trying to avoid early cancellations. Still think we're at <20% likelihood as we can't do quarantine upon return. I have carried insurance cover for the accommodation in the event of cancellation due govt travel restrictions, resort closure or VRBO going bust.

My earlier question aside from resorts that do go late to April normally this year is there anyway of extending many resorts way beyond normal end to possibly cover off some of the lost early season?
Might not be as good but spring skiing is nice longer days too and not bitterly cold.

The reason many resorts close in April is lack of demand rather than lack of snow. If you visit many resorts in the last week of the season, you often have the slopes pretty much to yourself.

In which case this has to be the one potential bit of good news after the st storm everyone has had.

But isn't it the case that with temperatures in late March/April, the snow tends to be quite mushy?

More so for sure - but longer daylight hours might mean same usable time on the slopes.

We would need the light and piste staff to be prepared to open lifts to public at 7am

If you did 9-4pm the 2-4pm might be leg burning whereas if you went 7-2pm and had lunch AFTER 2pm then I’d wager it would be fine.

Personally I think the end of season skiing is the best time to go. Quiet slopes, warmer weather, usually blue skies. The key to get out early. I like to ski for the first half of the day, and then go walking, biking or just relaxing for the afternoon.

I’ve been late March and also first week of April before (which I consider late) on those times as you say blue sky was far more often and also not a single whiteout.
