Most of the VIP chalets were brand new, so I'd guess they were built with either venture capital or investment fund money, with seed capital from VIP as a buy-in and loyalty item.
60 chalets at 0.5 to 0.75 million Euro construction cost. I'd doubt VIP put up all this money themselves. but they might be cleaned out now.
I remember reading Chris Evans' book, when he was "buying" Virgin Radio he raised 80+ million in investment capital but had to put the rest in himself from his cash. He wrote that the business model was fine as long as it was a success, but if the station or plan went sour, his £5million was the last to be repaid and the most at risk.

Ideally 150000 euros. In borg that seems to get a 1 bed flat, in morzine a studio and in saalbach it doesn’t get you anything.
I guess up to 300000 - 400000 euros to open up my options.
Size requirements is another funny thing I’m single and don’t have a family. So would be happy with a studio, on the other hand. A proper 1 bed flat, a parking space and a cupboard that fit a couple of mountain bikes would be perfect.
Sadly Eu150k won't get you anything really in Morzine village. The 2 bed appts are all 300k and up in the central village, this is walking distance from 'town' Once you get further out to Essert-Romand and Montriod it gets reasonable, but you're 5 mins in the car from Morzine. Its gone crazy over the last 10 yrs, hardly any of the old buildings remain, everything is being converted to appt blocks and super chalets. Damn you VIP !!I guess up to 300000 - 400000 euros to open up my options.

This is the site of my favourite pizza restaurant and an old farming barn in Aug this year:
I used to drive more to the French Alps when I lived in Cambs and Nottingham, but now it's too much of a ball-ache. I live 7 hours UK driving from Dover.
Flying is far easier for us, but all my stuff is stored out there, which is very nice, so we only take hand luggage.
Even if we go to another resort, I'll pick up my stuff and drive onwards.
In the summer my brother often rents a big van and puts two or three motorbikes in the back. He and his mates like motorbikes down there, but not the ride down. He said the first 90 minutes on a litre sports bike is fun, but not 7 hours....
The drive is fine down to the Alps, when is goes fine, but far far worse if you have a problem. I have a friend who broke his ankle on a ski holiday, his wife couldn't drive back, so the car got left there until the insurance company finally agreed to pay for a driver to go and pick it up.
I also know someone who fell asleep on the autoroute near Reims and destroyed his car.
I got a 1200 Franc fine for speeding quite a long time ago.

Please guys. Impact of Brexit on ability to get to ski resorts is fine. General Brexit discussion goes into the Brexit threads.
Yeah,I have the honour of starting this thread, which gives me precisely zero power or control, but...
Discussion on skiing in 20-21 season and not Brexit please.

Annnnnnyway, personally I'm looking forward to the 4hr queue for non-EU arrivals at Chambery Airport where they have one booth open, staffed by the most disinterested looking Frenchman they can find to scrutinise every single page of our shiny new blue passports whilst we all wonder if that transport coach has got a heater. C'est la vie.
I have always been advised to steer clear of using Chambery as apparently the slightest bit of snow shuts it down, along with fog and strong winds.I know that Geneva is never much fun, but by all accounts Chambery is a worse idea on the whole?
Fly in and out Mon-Fri and it's fine. Similarly in the summer is fine. Haven't been to Chambery since school days, but I remember a tiny airport and a 2 hour transfer
I flew Geneva to Heathrow with Air France last year on a Monday in February, no luggage, straight to gate A2 ( A2 for flip's sake, its behind the duty free !!) and was on the plane in about 25 mins from hire car drop-off.

The title, #postcrisis seems a little misplaced in hindsight. We're in the middle of a pretty fking big crisis right now.
I was so optimistic when I titled the thread. People were talking about it all being over by September 2020 !I've now spent 9 months in PPE at work and it's hard. 2-3 hour operations in FFP3 respirators and a 5Kg leaded jacket. No fun.

Thanks for the on-topic swerve.
Just before Christmas, my mate with a chalet in Chamonix confirmed March 2021 dates for the annual boys' trip. I allow the likelihood of it actually working out is low, nevertheless it's something wildly exciting to look forward to
Now, anyone know the Porsche recommendations on winter tyres + wheel sizing for a 997 Turbo?? Road trip time...
I put Sotozerros on. I think they are N rated, but at 305 section it ain't cheapJust before Christmas, my mate with a chalet in Chamonix confirmed March 2021 dates for the annual boys' trip. Planning for the Alps in August though, probably lower down and use the car rather than staying right in resort. Or maybe Chamonix. There are too many options!
Don't think there are too many options for skiing in August! Even the glaciers will be closed then. This August it was really weird as the village was full of French property owners holidaying in their own places, instead of tourists. Nice though. Predominantly French numberplates on cars, and (incredibly) French being spoken on the streets !!

Geneva today was turning away anyone on UK flights who wasn't a Swiss resident.
French ski lifts due to open on 7th of Jan. Unfortunately, I think that is highly unlikely.
This is interesting. Do you mind me asking what your source is for this? I have total confidence in your report, but I'm interested is it your observation, or a friend or where? French ski lifts due to open on 7th of Jan. Unfortunately, I think that is highly unlikely.
Feel free to tell me to FO.
not here please, is that ok? There are loads of vaccination threads on PH
Who's going skiing and where - 2021 #postcrisis
I have flights to Geneva for half-term, but I think there's near zero chance of that being possible.
Ironically my second dose of vaccine is 10th Feb, and my wife might be vaccinated by then too. But the kids won't. And we have lateral flow tests twice weekly, perhaps the Swiss or French will ask for this....
still gloomy for Feb 13th,
School break up then on 1st April, which is a possibility.

From where and on what day? My Glasgow flights to Geneva on the 14th are still showing as live.
However we had some EasyJet half term flights from Reykjavik to Glasgow cancelled earlier this week so guess our Geneva flights will be getting cancelled in the next couple of days.
Ditto my GLA-GVA on Feb 13th, not cancelled as of 2mins ago. However we had some EasyJet half term flights from Reykjavik to Glasgow cancelled earlier this week so guess our Geneva flights will be getting cancelled in the next couple of days.

BA emailed yesterday and formally canned our trip out to Vanc/Whistler end of Feb. Yay.
Still no cancellation for my 13th Feb Easyjet flight Glasgow to Geneva.Looking at the seating plan for that flight, 44 out of the total 186 seats are booked/reserved. They aren't going to operate it at 22% occupancy, are they?

Cancelled as I expected/hoped.
I'll take a voucher and try and use it in the late summer.
The equivalent BA flights were more expensive, but travel restrictions mean I can't fly anyhow.
Easyjet don't offer anything but the voucher.
That's 2 ski trips lost to the virus now. I'm working 50 hrs a week on the Covid wards and operating on infected patients. I really need a holiday. But it's all relative.
Anyone fancy a "WHO'S GOING SKIING AND WHERE - 2022 #crisiswhatcrisis" thread?

Have any PHers managed to get a ski holiday in and done at all? I'm on about your regular UK residents who will be flying or driving out for the week here. I don't recall seeing any.
I got a week in mid December, just before they closed the border.News from Portes du Soleil
If you can hike up, the powder runs are awesome. This shot from a few days ago.
I have lots of friends with French residency out there and they tell me the French furlough is pretty generous, paying 70% of salary up to a max of €45.68 per hour (!)
And they are talking about asking workers to drop below 30hrs/week but pay them 85% of salary for up to 2 years. Damned socialists
Cold comfort if there is a ruined tourist economy to come back to...
I think there will be a bubble-burst for the property booms that have been happening in European, snow-sure, resorts.

It appears so. But you can't leave the UK currently....
You can do if you're imaginative and relaxed about the possibility of a fine. So I think the imaginative and relaxed flouting of a travel ban is not for me. Much as I dearly want to go on holiday, social mixing of the un-immunised, at levels we have seen previously, is not safe yet.
Hospitals full = turn up at the door of A&E out of breath and find you are turned away to die in the car park.
Sorry to overreact, but come and see the nightmare on the wards.
