I work for an airline and we’re still trying to get clarification about what we can and can’t do regarding travel. End of last week we were getting information about more travel corridors opening and airport testing, then suddenly on Saturday the national lockdown gets announced.

It’s pretty hard to plan in this kind of environment.
It’s total bullst. Why in the fk would you keep more people in country for a lockdown than you needed to? More people to catch and spread the lurgy.

Because as I’ve said before those people will want to comeback at some point for instance if the country they’re visiting implies restrictions. Plus it also stops people visiting us and bringing it in.

Right but we can only visit countries that have far lower covid infection rates than our own without quarantine so the risk of bringing covid back is a tiny fraction of the risk of catching and transmitting it by staying in the U.K. Many of the places we can currently visit require negative tests so using the Caribbean as an example anyone going to or from St Lucia or Barbados is pretty much guaranteed to be infection free having taken 2 tests on their trip and arrived back from somewhere with negligible covid cases.

Who is going to visit in the middle of a lockdown? That would be a bit of wasted trip no? And again we have quarantine measures in place for those arriving from countries deemed high risk (most of which are lower risk than our own still).

Yet another knee jerk reaction that will cause untold damage. Completely indefensible.

But our rates are much worse than theirs, it’s safer to go to these countries than stay in the U.K.

We’re not and never have stopped people bringing it in from the start of the pandemic. We’ve had no closed borders just quarantines brought in after the first wave and advice about non essential travel for U.K. citizens.

So the chances of residents of England taking it to them countries is then high. Spain is an example of that is it not? Low numbers everyone went on holiday and then the numbers went up?

Which is why most countries now require us to have a negative test before we head there.

What happened in the past is somewhat irrelevant the current situation with additional mitigations in place.

Except Swiss research suggests the current variant of the virus came from Spain

Made it Shnozz. No police on any municipality borders. Given the news in England tonight, if the situation in Spain remains unchanged we might be staying for a while because we want to. It was 23C when we landed at 5pm smile
Result mate! Had a feeling you would neither encounter any issues nor even see any police. We were at a Halloween do last night and the police visited but left after checking the rules were complied with. Curfew just meant we got a cab home a little earlier than usual which was probably a good thing as I was up reasonable time for a local car meet.

Back on the beers now enjoying an outside terrace for the F1.

Aside from a week in Denmark visiting the in-laws, I’ve not left Spain since end of June and with this lockdown now don’t intend to until Xmas at the earliest. Issue will be next year with the 90/180 day rule due to Brexit. Could force me back to the U.K. which will be annoying.

Thanks for the reminder about the F1 today!

Have you thought about obtaining Spanish residency? I understand you can still keep your UK passport but will pay your taxes in Spain. It also means you get a EU passport which would be useful in many ways. I’m considering it if things continue to worsen in the UK.

I have considered it mate but looked into the tax position and it would be a chunky increase for me. Mrs Shnozz is also a lecturer at a red brick university so has to be U.K. based. I can work remotely year round but aside from this weird Covid time when lectures are online, we will have to be U.K. based for the foreseeable. However, this odd time has meant we have enjoyed a prolonged period here in Spain and for that I’m grateful.

Just browsing the Easyjet site and it seems people are still booking flights to the Canaries from Bristol on 25th November.

I am unclear whether Welsh people can still travel to Bristol Airport when their Welsh lockdown ends on 9 November.
Clearly someone thinks they can travel abroad but I am wondering who.

People booking or available to book?

Travel permitted for work. Not sure ho many people commute for work to the Canaries.

Also the govt has to get it through parliament so it isn't a rule yet?

"This flight was last booked 16 minutes ago" indicators.

I imagine, as a company that is burning cash, they will take any bookings they can until the lockdown comes in. They then have the payment and their booked customers provide some working cashflow until they refund.

Will be interesting to see the wording of the stuff put to parliament.

Is the flight/holiday actually cancelled? If not you can still travel to the airport early and get there before the lockdown starts at midnight?
It wasn't clear... we didn't want to risk it so we swapped and are off to Gran Canaria tomorrow. Its not St Lucia like we wanted but its better than nothing and we got a good chunk of cash back.

The flight would have still been going, also the airline would have been getting the people that were already in St Lucia coming home.

The last thing an airline wants to do is cancel your flight.

Wales will drop the national lockdown on 9th November but the new restrictions are

no travel restrictions inside Wales but

no leaving Wales without good reason (and vice-versa for the English).

A quick check of Cardiff airport shows no flights by Vueling (limited Spanish destinations anyway) or Ryanair (Spain and Portugal) until next year so the "entry into England ban" effectively makes it a back door to wipe out the possibility of using English airports.

Wait...no, he's just added in no international travel...

We got a good deal to swap so it only cost us £550 a head for a week in a 5* hotel called Lopesan Baobab. Checked in earlier and so far so good the hotel is really nice for the price.

If the St Lucia flights go ahead then its not the end of the world as we still got away!
