Card cloning: this could just as easily have happened with hacking the credit card processing company. It happens all the time, sadly.
Absolutely. I applied for a Barclaycard back in March that came with a useless credit limit of £200. I threw it in a drawer. Didn’t even activate it. Last month it was up to its meagre limit from Deliveroo transactions in London after being cloned.I've used Cicar for rentals in the Canaries. Full cover, just leave car near office and tell them where it is. No faff, no comeback.
OK it's £20 to £30 a day but it's just nice not to have to take pics or worry about anything else. Like car hire used to be.
Cheaper if you hire for a week.
I used a company called Perfanis in Kefalonia. The guy who dropped the car off, a perfect condition Fiesta, even invited me to key the car in front of him to prove there would be no charge lol.
Same again, just leave car and tell them where it is. Again no comeback.
They are around £120 a week. Not the cheap deals that some of you are getting, but I prefer not to sweat it and it's still far cheaper than UK rental.

I can understand that Croyde. I too have used similar no-nonsense companies when I travelled less frequently as it was just nicer than sweating every drop off time and watching my credit card like a hawk for the month after returning.
However, when I bought a place abroad and was in a hire car monthly, the costs racked up and so I went down the route of annual excess cover and used whatever cheap deal I could source. I did that countless times and never got stung, despite using some of the companies that online reviews suggested were utter cowboys. It was rare I would pay more than €2 a day in low season and €5-€10 in peak seasons.
My neighbour in Spain has done this for the last 2 years instead of buying a car. In that time she reckons she has had one try on where they tried to argue damage that she was able to prove was there at collection. She nips to the airport every fortnight or so and swaps the car for another and comes back home (we live not too far from airport so not too inconvenient). In effect she has a brand new car, insured and taxed, for circa €30-€50 a month in most months. I pay more than that just to tax and insure my car, and that’s before any running costs and the actual purchase costs (and cars are twice the price in Spain). Makes a lot of sense economically.

Doesn't matter if you don't get the cheapest deal. On paper Autoriesen are never anywhere near the best price in the Canaries but they get my business every single time. For peace of mind it's worth a few quid more.OK it's £20 to £30 a day but it's just nice not to have to take pics or worry about anything else. Like car hire used to be.

That’s what I am doing presently, popping to/from the airport to swap our hire car, a Focus costing £3 per day. We arrived two weeks ago for a 10 day stay, but extended today for another 3 weeks until 5th Dec However, when I bought a place abroad and was in a hire car monthly, the costs racked up and so I went down the route of annual excess cover and used whatever cheap deal I could source. I have used many of them but Autoreisen knock them all into a cocked hat. Always cheaper than everyone else, always get a decent little Citroen C3 for less than £70 a week, no extra insurance, drop it in the car park, never ever had an issue. Anyone taken a gamble and booked a holiday for December?
I have one booked for the 4th December, but that was booked before the current lockdown was announced. As it is a package and not separate bookings of flights and hotel it will likely be out of my hands whether it is cancelled or not if the lockdown is extended. However if you wanted to go I doubt it would be too hard. My brother disappeared to the Canary Isles with his wife last week for a couple of months 'for work', but in reality to 'work from home' from there. I don't believe he had any issues flying out.

I considered it but, being in Wales, I have to get to Bristol so I don't know how strict they are when they find you're from Wales. Will they then let you fly?Though the English lockdown ends on 2nd December, I still have no idea if we are going to be allowed out of Wales or if they're going to put draconian restrictions on the English. In Wales, we can't leave. I'm a chancer but having lost costs on two different holidays already, I am naturally reluctant to p*ss money down the drain for a third time.

Yes, 14th Dec to Tenerife for our annual winter sun holiday, but it was booked before this recent lockdown. However, Easyjet mailed me yesterday informing my Luton flight is no longer, and offered an alternate flight on the same date at Gatwick instead. Been offered 3 options, accept the new flights, vouchers or a full refund. Will wait a little while to assess the state of play before making my final decision.
