a question - do you have to send the old passport back at the point of application for the new one?
as stands mine is in date for a trip in August, but out of date for another trip September. so do I send it now and risk not getting either back for the August trip???
Catch 22... When in August? as stands mine is in date for a trip in August, but out of date for another trip September. so do I send it now and risk not getting either back for the August trip???

go on the 14th August, I think Im taking a massive gamble to get it back in 5 weeks. The September trip I could move/push back, so maybe that's the process to take.I didn't bother renewing it earlier in year as I really didn't think we'd be travelling anywhere this year

Assume you're going to an EU country? Most other countries require at least 3 months of time remaining on a passport.I didn't bother renewing it earlier in year as I really didn't think we'd be travelling anywhere this year
Mrs. Random renewed hers online about 2 months ago - took about a week from posting special delivery to getting a new (burgundy) one back in the post.
I did mine about 3 weeks ago, took about 10 days start to finish and got a decidedly dull blue one back.
When you apply it warns of delays due to understaffing, but I would imagine at the moment the last thing at the back of Joe Public's mind is renewing passports that they can't use at the moment!

Just logged in to see the progress on my Son's renewal. Bearing in mind I did mine at the same time and had it back in about a week, whereas time seems to have stood still on his since 12th June.

Just to update on my experience..
I have attempted to call the passport office today.. 6 times.
I did not get through, call defaults to call back service which does not call back.
I've seen a few people getting joy on twitter. They ask for a status update and are then asked to DM their info. I have attempted to call the passport office today.. 6 times.

How do you know my surname isn't actually Random? Or maybe her maiden name is Random, I was Mr. Username, I went double-barreled like a good, downtrodden husband but she didn't, making a statement of not wanting to be oppressed by our male dominated society?

I applied on March 30th and it's being shipped DHL from Wellington (NZ) passed through Sydney yesterday.
Yes, yes I know it's not a UK passport, but it's taken about the same amount of time and only because Royal Mail/ NZ Post lost an envelope containing a certificate for three weeks. Delivery by Wednesday according to DHL tracking.
