Myself and the wife are off to Grasmere in a couple of weeks time for the weekend. Can anyone recommend somewhere local for a meal on Saturday evening? We usually go to Misto in Ambleside but they’re not taking bookings and I don’t want to risk just turning up.

Cheers!
If you don't mind driving (not too far), how about The Drunken Duck?

Thanks. We’ve drove past it many times, never tried it though. They’re only taking bookings a week in advance due to staff shortages. This seems to be a common problem all over, we were in Northumberland last week and a number of places had signs up saying they were struggling for staff so please bear with them.

I’m here at the moment. And it is, to put it mildly, a tad busy. Last weekend was akin to trying to get in and out of silverstone.

You will need a particularly high tolerance of middle aged men wearing iridescent Oakleys, artificially faded surf tee shirts and the constant sound of paddle boards being pumped up and let down. And obvs vw campers. Everywhere.

Wherever you decide you really must book as you won’t stand a chance otherwise.

Visited Bowness today with my daughter. Only a few of hours on the boat and Brockholes (on the playground, eating some food)

Nice day. Wasn’t overly busy considering how busy it has been in the past with chinese tourists for example.

Would love to spend a week there with 20-25 degrees weather. Was jealous of the people staying over as I was driving home.

Quite lucky to be 1 hr 30 away from the Lakes. An extra 30 if we go Keswick.

How local? Me and the mrs stayed in kirkby lonsdale the other month and on a trio to keswick are at the bank tavern and would highly recommend it, mrs loved her curry and my pie was bang on. We ending up having to go back to keswick because an article I've been after for years without using ebay was sat looking at me in the window of an antique shop...that shut just half an hour before so ended up back in bank for dinner the day after and the bacon and cheese baguette was one of the best sandwiches/pub dinners I've ever had.

We’re staying in Grasmere but I want to have a visit to Keswick, might be an option for lunch. Cheers!

Old bank hotel in Grasmere used to be really good. There was an upcoming chef there who moved on but replacement wasn't bad. I know the hotel has been sold so not sure what current state is

The gingerbread alone in Grasmere is worth travelling for. Yum

On Friday around noon, you couldn’t even get off the M6 at J40 (A66) , it was so busy. I’d avoid the place until after the (English) school holidays.

Beat all the queues

Most of us locals avoid the Lakes until the tourists go away.

A sunny day in Sept is just a nice. A freezing day in January is incredible.

Does the gingerbread taste as good from an online order? After a couple of days the powdery texture changes. Still nice to eat but not the same as fresh from the shop

Yes I’m aware of that, my folks live just outside. I wanted to go East towards Appleby but the queue wasn’t moving at all. Ended up going via Shap.

However coming back, I got from the A66 Westbound onto the M6 North without stopping at any lights on the roundabout. First time ever!

Just got back from a wet weekend at the Daffodil hotel in Grasmere. Other than the weather it was great.

In the end we ate in the hotel restaurant on the Friday night, the food was really good but expensive. Last night we went to Bar eS in Ambleside, again that was very good, Mexican tapas, a bit different but good food nevertheless. I’d recommend Bar eS if anyone fancies something different, the staff there were great also.

What is the favoured place to eat in Cockermouth? The first place I ate at closed on Weds and Thu due to staff shortages.

Weather looks set to improve this week which is good. Tbh I don't go anywhere near Windermere in the summer holidays, too busy. Although I don't expect there will be the usual bus loads of Asian tourists no doubt the numbers have been replaced by domestic staycationors.
