With my trip to the Ring in November now cancelled for the 3rd time this year (due to having to quarantine to Germany upon arrival) I am looking for a last minute plan. I have put off selling my 2017 M6 as I really wanted to take it to the Ring, but will probably now just sell as it looks unlikely until probably spring 2021.

So, with some time booked off work I am looking for somewhere to go for 2 nights with some good driving roads & scenery which will be quiet. I am based in midlands.

Can't go to Wales due to restrictions
Don't want to go to Scotland, did NC500 in July
Have a Eurotunnel ticket still for 14-16 November, but don't think there is anywhere where quarantine is not required either outbound or inbound.

Thinking possibly Northumberland or Lake District. Any other recommendations?

You need to report the post, the mods don't read everything.

Lake District is a bit tight and narrow (and busy) for an M6. I'd say you'd be better off in North Yorkshire or Northumberland for more open roads and better sightlines.

I love the driving roads in and around the Cotswolds, then on toward Worcester/Shrewsbury. Yorkshire Moors also fun but a lot harder to get to if you're based in the south.

Depending on where you're starting these might work as two short (but demanding) days with an overnight and commutes to/from whereever you're starting?

Day 1

Day 2

These routes includes some properly spectacular roads, 95% two lane A- and B-roads but some maybe a little narrow and bumpy for your M6?

Ooo I like that route. Any recommended places to stay near the finish?

Sorry no, I’m in Leeds so I’ve only done these as day trips. We did stay in Hawick for a borders trip once, it was ok but far from glamorous!

There are lots of good, open and flowing ans very quiet routes in that north Pennines triangle in the middle of A66, A68 and A69.

Yes, and day 1 of my route might be a bit too twisty - although Top Gear shot the Diablo/F40/XJ220 film down part of it!

All depends on what you prefer. Google street view is your friend for planning.

The only really knarly bit is the stretch between Hawes and Kirky Stephen/Brough (depending on which route you take), as there're some small roads to get through, but not for long.

The journey from Wetherby to Pool is dull, as is the A65 from Skipton to Settle, but you've got to get cross country somehow.

A1 to Settle is basically commuting, I live near Settle so I do travel this road regularly.
I’d go farther north and try Ripley, Pateley Bridge, Grassington. Then over to Settle.
Some of those roads are biker routes at weekends so if the weather is good beware. Many accidents on the long sweeping bends, mid week no problem.
There’s the hotel near Hawes where Clarkson had his late supper but you need to check who’s open or has availability. The Dales booked solid when travel was allowed every campsite hotel etc but it should have calmed down by now.

If uou went that way you could go up past Malham Tarn and drop down onto the Ribbleshead road.

New route from A1 would be somethong like off at Minskip Jn. 48, Knaresborough, Pately Bridge, Grassington, Arncliffe, Malham Tarn, Horton in Ribblesdale.

Good calls re "commuting". I know the Pately-Grassington road but not the small roads over the top to Horton, I'll have to try those.

The commute isn't not all bad though, the Beckwithshaw road is great and the A59 and A65 are scenic and can be fast if you're able to get past traffic or start early.
