I was under the impression lateral flow tests were only a few quid?

I'm having to do 2-3 tests a week and I get an hour's overtime per test so it must be costing someone (the tax payer ultimately) a fortune.
An hours overtime for 2 minutes work?

I've binned all thoughts of a holiday for a very long time yet.
I haven't! Five days in the Peak District booked for next week, looking forward to a change of scene and some different walks.

And then No2 son fractured his ankle this morning! Thankfully fairly minor but he's hobbling around in a boot for the next few weeks at least. cry

The worst thing is it was jumping off a smallish grass bank in the sodding garden centre! hehe

yes No point whatsoever in going anywhere if you're not going to be able to relax and enjoy yourself when you get there.

A holiday is for relaxing and having fun.

I’ve always booked up more or less as soon as we’ve got home from last holiday. Basically as the holiday blues sets in so having something to look forward to is great for mental health.

I cannot wait until there are no issues in overseas travel - I’ve done it at least once every year of my life from starting primary school. However I guess as I’ve done it so much not doing it for a little bit /different location in the U.K. means I’m not missing out plus it’s still a holiday.

This thread like every debate is polar but it is odd the response of some “there there don’t worry it’s too risky for you we understand but it’s fine for us”. It’s laughable & then people guessing every way about what might or might not happen + getting in a few handbags if someone disagrees with their view

Private jet prices have come down a fair bit, that is a very stressless way to travel as we recently found out, you still have the test thing but they aren't stressful tbh.
I looked at that for skiing this year (not that it happened) Aerodrome is 15 mins from my house, can drive right up to the plane, bags on and off you go, and then free parking. Could land 15 mins from resort. For eight of us it worked out and extra £250/head for the holiday which I thought was worth it all day long. Rest of our group weren't so up for it mind but certainly will be pushing for it next year. 4hrs door to door instead of a very long day. Wasn't a jet though and nothing fancy.
To be fair i’d consider a turbo prop next time anyway, the jets arent much quicker or quieter over sub 2hr distances, what got me was the flexibility and empty airports as you choose your time, they never even checked our luguage, we walked straight through the airport, no security, biggin hill never even checked passports on entry!

Like you say, with a group its a no brainer if everyones on board, for 2 people it was a tad excessive but worth it to have contactless travel before our vaccinations.

Welshy are you actually ill or something? I don’t think posting here is helping whatever it is.

Can you honestly not understand that someone like you won’t enjoy a foreign holiday at the moment but someone else who perceives the risk and hassle differently to you might enjoy it and be able to relax and have fun?

It’s not that it’s more or less risky (assuming you’re not more or less vulnerable it’s about to different people it’s about perception of risk and whether we’d enjoy it or not.

You obviously wouldn’t enjoy it, we get it. Nobody is forcing you or trying to get you to go anywhere so just move on be happy with your decision and come back for next year’s summer holidays thread.

Bad luck and timing! I remember my daughter cycled into the back of a parked car and broke a tooth the day before we were going to Portugal one year. Managed to get her into a dentist that day and get it sorted.

What will you do? Still go and he’ll just do less walking or something? I expect my sons would be quite happy to stay in the house whilst we went walking tbh. hehe

I’ll quote the original post of the thread - it’s not specific about U.K. or overseas holidays.

“ So, who's making plans for summer holidays at the moment?

Do we think they'll be able to happen?

I'm tentatively hoping that an Easter driving trip will be possible! What are the chances do we think? ”

I was clearly over-optimistic... I’m now aiming for an early-June trip. Not getting my hopes up though...

Could be a bit early but you might be lucky and I expect it depends entirely on the destination? Infection rates seem to vary massively from place to place at the moment.

End of July is still the plan for us, hopefully restrictions will be regional ie not putting the canaries into the same category as all of Spain and even vary from island to island in a country (like greece last year) rather than just by country.

Bloody kids! biggrin

We're trying to rearrange it. The owner seemed amenable initially, but has gone quiet...

There are 5 of us and it's a 3 bed cottage with a single open plan living space, the broadband is rubbish and he's just 11 so we're wary of leaving him on his own all day. And to top it off he's the one least likely to moan on a walk. I've said we're going out for a walk today as we did bugger all yesterday (apart from the ill-fated garden centre trip...) and already had his twin sister complaining it's unfair he gets to sit on his bum all day! hehe

FML!

ETA she's just replied and moved us to October half term. thumbup

Vaccinations are going so slowly over here in Germany at the moment I've canceled our Fuerteventura holiday that was booked for September, I simply cannot be arsed with the 'will we won't we be going'. Full refunds from the hotel and Eurowings straight away with no hassle at all.

I'll book something on the spur of the moment if we're not all dead in September and are allowed out.

True enough.... turboprops are fine over shorter distances. Luxair, our flag carrier, use Bombardier Dash 8 - Q400's* for most of their European flights, which are many routes! They only roll out the 737s for Madiera, Turkey and North Africa. *The airline captains also colect them and fly them back from the factory in Canada, with a few stops along the way!

Must admit, being the delicate wall flower that I am I think I would notice if someone kept having a go at me. Must have missed that post/s

But if somebody wants a fight they can meet me behind the bike sheds after school.

One big problem, with foreign holidays, from the U.K. at present, is the fact that the mooted ‘traffic light’ system, that’s being considered, is a nightmare. If the destination country changes ‘colour’ during your holiday, you risk a possible 2 grand, 10 day, mandatory extension to your holiday. Good luck squaring that with ‘the boss’. Even if you’re ‘the boss’ it’s still a mightily inconvenient / expensive additional cost.

Yep, that’s a worry. Mrs BC and I are retired but the thought of being imprisoned in a hotel room on our return is horrible

My flights are booked for my solo trip, so I'm just waiting to book accommodation but I won't lie, the constant thought of new rules and bs u-turns has made me quite drained already. I'm also pretty certain the traffic light system will also screw me royally as my trip is for 1 month.

I feel like forgetting about all travelling I've had planned for this year. It's been part of my healing process from a nasty breakup I've been dealing with since the first week of lockdown a year ago but being stuck alone indoors all summer will be another devastating blow.

You will not be stuck indoors in the summer - certainly not in the British isles.

Besides a few pub and food sessions with friends and family, I sadly will. All my friends are coupled up and have planned their annual leave with their loved ones and I don't plan to travel alone in the British Isles.
