Is up 250% on last year a lot?
Well yes. Based on the same time last year and pre covid bookings.

There’s no indication that will be the situation though?

As ever each to their own and we’ve all got different thoughts on what we can put up with or what we’d still manage to enjoy or just find a hassle.

I’m going to wait and see what the situation actually is and base that on whether we go away or not.
You're right. I am hoping it is not the situation as I don't want the potential stress of not being able to get home. I probably should book the apartments I like in different places assuming they allow full cancellations.

That’s the thing, finding decent cancellation policies.

I’ve looked at quite a few villa companies with cancellation policies based on when you place the booking rather than time before your stay and covid changes could easily leave you out of pocket. I understand why they’re like that but it’s not ideal in a constantly changing situation.

Why do you think there’s no chance of going abroad this year?

Is that just you not wanting to go abroad or do you feel that others won’t be able to?

No chance of going abroad either means there will be a U.K. ban on non essential travel (like now) for the whole year or most countries you might want to go to will introduce bans on tourists?

Personally I think restrictions in the UK will be easing by Easter and there will be every chance of going abroad on holiday this summer (like last year) with very different rules and restrictions for entry to different countries, just as there is at the moment.
Last year we were all set to go to France in August, but the quarantine rules meant we couldn't go as an extra 2 weeks off/WFH wasn't possible.

And by the time we found out there was nothing available in the UK for sensible money.

This summer should be fine, but the situation is so changeable you just can't be sure. So we've just booked a place in Cornwall (And there's not much left...)

Being stored at Southend Airport for 3 - 6 months at the long term car park.

I assume Southend is not expecting much holiday traffic any time soon!

At least you’ve got that in the bag. Only “stay at home” U.K. lockdowns could possibly stop that and that looks unlikely (to me anyway) still in summer.

Ideally I’d like a villa on a Greek island this summer and hopefully it’s going to be possible.

In a few weeks time our holiday let full redec and new furnishing throughout will be complete. Stone barn conversion dating back to 1500's, 3 ensuite bedrooms, views of the sea in 2 directions, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I am expecting to get it booked up pretty quickly when we release it

I don't think it will be very relaxing relying on a covid19 test to get home and your life is at the mercy of a flawed test or as I recently heard, it can show positive if you have had it within the last 3 months (i got told this from someone who recently tested positive at a hospital)

Agreed. I would say Spain in particular will be very keen to facilitate a "travel corridor" given how much of their economy depends on tourism.

We dont have to pay the balance of our late june / early july holiday to the Canary Islands until mid April and we've only put in £80 each deposit so far, so wouldnt care about losing that.

We'd have no issues with self isolation for two weeks upon return but two weeks in some government approved quarantine hotel would be unpalatable / not worth the hassle. I dont think it will come to that though.

Whilst the safest approach would be to book last minute we do like to have something to look forward to / plan for and its also motivation for us to lose the lockdown lbs.

We like to have something booked too as there’s a few of us and I’m hoping to take my mum which seems unlikely this year still.

Holiday companies and airlines will be quick to respond to changes in rules last minute though. I remember last summer seeing travel corridors changing on the Thursday evening and airlines and holiday companies laying on (and filling) loads of extra flights over the weekend departing on the Sunday and Monday.

The demand is still massive for foreign holidays and companies will be more than happy to fill it where possible,

There’s been big changes in the market with Thomas cook going bust and Norwegian vastly reducing flights. Some companies have made large numbers of redundancies and cutbacks in capacity and others are keeping everything ready for the upturn in holiday travel. Not so much for business travel.

The U.K. market is pretty unique like this where even in other Northern European traditional foreign summer holiday markets like Scandinavia we’re seeing reductions in demand but the British still love getting away and prioritise a foreign summer holiday pretty highly.

No UK holidays for me thanks - the food and weather are appalling and even at best it's still a miserably overcrowded, overpriced and dismal experience and that's gonna get a million times worse this summer if nobody else is traveling abroad.

I'm absolutely going nowhere until Europe opens up again.
You can’t pick the weather but you can just go to a nice country house hotel, indoor spa, good food and it won’t be crowded.
Eww, no thanks. smile

yes I was hoping to book something in France and in the UK and cancel the France option if it looked unlikely but we can't rely on the government not to panic at the last minute. rolleyes

Yeah everyone’s different and so is their circumstances but that’s not for me either.

I could probably go for a nice house in Cornwall or Devon on the coast etc but that would definitely be a second choice to a villa in Greece for me anyway.

Still some people would think staying in a villa in Greece would be rubbish and tbh I probably would have too when I was in my 20s

Indeed.

You think it’s looking good and then we hear there’s going to be a new announcement . . .

Even old Grant Shapps (secretary of state for transport) got caught out on holiday last year.

Its the fact that - under normal circumstances - you can get away somewhere foreign with pretty much guaranteed decent weather and possibly of a higher standard for usually significantly less than a staycation.

It’s because even if you’ve been double jabbed you could be taking the virus to the other country. Causing health issues for locals in that area or other tourists who take it back elsewhere.

You could also pick up a new strain not yet detected and bring it back into the U.K.

If there are any covid issues whilst away the hotel you are staying at might lockdown so your stuck to room and balcony for 2 weeks. Or other issues like everything is shut so nothing to do. Or there may be issues which mean your stranded and your insurance policy doesn’t cover return costs meaning ££ costs for you.

Lastly the 10 days isolation in a hotel room on return to the U.K. at your cost c£1.6k per person.

Thats not true....... you start at 8am when you are on hols with the family!! or that's what you used to tell us!

Anyhow as all the flight routes are getting locked down don't think many people are going anywhere. We have a direct flight to the Maldives still from here, but somehow I think Mrs GT03ROB, will be a bit pissed if while she's under UK lockdown I tell her I'm off to the Maldives for a couple of weeks on my next leave!
