Not specifically aimed at you, but how are you dealing with the "Boris puts us into lockdown" element.

I cant speak for everyone, but forking out a good chunk of cash for a week somewhere and then losing it because i cant get there, is rather limiting the options?
I haven't booked yet - but I don't plan on booking anywhere that doesn't have acceptable booking conditions. Plus, I will pay with a credit card. Also, I have annual travel insurance that has been continually in force for at least 10 years - I haven't checked what cover they will give me yet - but I will.

I've still got £2K tied up in a hotel booking from March 2020 - I booked direct and took the 15% discount for non-cancelable option (this was in October 2019). Moved it last March to the same dates in March 2021, moved it a couple of weeks ago to the same dates in March 2022.

Given that this wouldn't be my ideal choice of holiday, if it can't go ahead this year then I'll be after a refund. Just need to make sure the Ts & Cs are suitable.

Hopefully you'll be OK with the hotel refund. We had similar with hotel booked pre-flight to NY (and concert at MSQ) in April last year. All binned off. Hotel in NY and flights swiftly refunded. Concert tickets refunded. Hotel in UK initially said no (was pre-paid to get discount like you) so I emailed equivalent of 'oi, ref!' and they refunded without further quibble. BA seat bookings took longest to sort but got there in the end. All that admin to go nowhere and do nothing. Oh how we laughed!

I figure the summer should be safe although there's possible issues with limits of groups meeting. However, in our case SiL (+2 kids) is single so should work as a bubble.

And we paid on credit card if it comes to it. Some places wanted a bank transfer...

Just moved Zanzibar at Easter to October. Expect to be able to book a last minute week abroad in the summer as well.

Zante in August was lovely last year.

I think i'm going to end up buying a caravan, park it on the drive and then live in it for a week, its probably the safer option.

As was Madeira in December.

I plan on taking things as they come as I did in 2020. My trip to Sardinia in May was cancelled, summer looked to much hassle with the rules changing every 5 minutes (and the weather at home was superb so why go anywhere), and then as the winter approached a quick look around threw up Madeira as a viable option for a couple of weeks away.

As for anywhere in the UK in June - rather a gamble. It could be glorious, but on the other hand it could be pissing it down as it was when I went to Cornwall for a week one year; and came back early because it was so miserable.

Wife and I usually have 4-5 or so breaks for a week each year. For 2020 we had 5 booked and ended up having to cancel all of them, got full refunds for everything, no quibble.

Booked nothing for 2021 other than 5 nights in a hotel at Falmouth, Cornwall, at the end of March to see family. This is something we do twice a year, always out of season. I think this will have to be cancelled as I don't think we'll be out of lockdown by then. We also have a repeat booking in place for November, and we'd like to think we be allowed there.

We have decided not to book anywhere abroad: too much uncertainty overseas and also on return to the UK at the moment. We don't want to be poolside, say, for a week worrying about being stuck quarantined for two weeks in some grotty hotel when we get back.

East coast is my neck of the woods, so to speak. If you're going that way, look at Northumberland down to Whitby / Robin Hoods Bay. Below there and you stray into the realms of Bridlington, Hornsea, Cleethorpes, Skegness etc. (Not really my cup of tea for a weeks long break!).

Also, staying North of Scarborough gives you easy access to the Yorkshire Dales and York if you fancy something different for a day.
yes My neck of the woods as well, this man talks sense.

I would perhaps look to stay in RHB if you need the sea as it's far quieter and drive to Whitby which is absolutely rammed peak season. As in rammed.

They are also quite isolated with not much around them, it takes an hour just to get anywhere (look at a map!)

How about staying in land? - say Richmond/Thirsk and day tripping to Whitby etc, you can also get to York, Harrogate, Ripon, Helmsley, Malton, Masham (beer) a lot easier. You also have The Forbidden Corner (a must see) and Lightwater valley for the kids.

Some of the best driving roads in England in Wensleydale, Teesdale, Swaledale on your doorstep too wink

I've never really clicked with Northumberland for some reason. It's c.45 mins away from me and I've never felt the need to go there more that 4 or 5 times in my life. I am very much in the minority on that however.
Thanks both - At the moment Whitby is my target destination although this may change. Harrogate and surrounding areas is very familiar, my Grandad lived there, but we didn't used to visit the coast.

I really want to have a sea view and also be in walking distance of places to eat for the evenings - so that seems to point to Whitby.

When you say rammed in peak season, is that just mid-July to early September, or is it end of May to end of September?

All of the cottages I've looked at so far either have no parking at all, or just room for a small / medium sized car. So my plan would be to park in one of the car parks, which would hopefully mean that escaping for day trips wouldn't mean being stuck in traffic for an hour before you've even left Whitby.

Quite happy for any day trip to take an hour.

Hunmanby Gap is quite nice. Lovely beach. Or come inland to York - less than an hour to the coast from there (and not far to Harrogate and the dales)

Whitby is nice in parts but I'm not sure I'd want to spend any more than 3-4 days there, although that may be because I go quite often either with the family or through work.

Personally I would get a farm cottage inland and use that as a base. There are some lovely restaurants in the town but they do need a bit of filtering out, also if you are staying in the town I hope you have some earplugs for the noise of the seagulls.

I had a look round this place last year if you are wanting to stay in the town, also has secure covered parking:

On a summers day Whitby is gridlocked. Pretty much one road through the centre and a single bridge biggrin.

Robin Hoods Bay is one way in, one way out but its very quaint, I like it (just be prepared for an uphill walk if you cant get parking!).

There is a campsite at the top of RHB I've always wanted to stay at, there are incredible views over the bay, waking up to that in the morning wouldn't be too shabby!

Whitby/RHB is just too busy most of the time. Try somewhere a little quieter or you'll have a frustrating time.

I have a soft spot for RHB, had my first holiday romance there when I was 8 biggrin

There's a great 4x4 off road place on the headland pretty much where you describe: http://www.nyoffroad.co.uk/

When you go over the mounds there you get mud - sky - sky - sea - SEA!!

Mind you, that's school holidays - even if it's not summer school holidays.

Is June the same?

I’m sure I’ve seen their holiday cottage in Rightmove a few months ago?

Haha, well if you know Whitby, you'll know it's a slightly contrived photo. The bridge has a traffic light system on it so everybody waits for the cars, then set off in both directions hence it looking worse than it actually is, but it's a nice photo op.

There's 1 million or so people living in the industrial areas around Whitby (Middlesbrough etc). If the sun comes out they have to go somewhere and it's usually Whitby they go for. So it's actually 'locals' day tripping rather than tourists.

Obviously during the week it's less busy.

O/T but in a random cross thread mash up, @Pete102 our affiliate gym is in Whitby and I train there occasionally. How local are you?
