We have a booking for September, and need to decide by mid August whether to pay the balance or not. Arrival there still seems to need quarantine until a negative test, but looks like rules may be evolving soon to reflect vaccination status particularly from UK and US.

Bodrum, Turkbuku. I like it there, can be a bit crowded but loads of choices around. It is only 4 hours from Gatwick too, so super hassle free travel.

I have every sympathy with Merkel.

With much of Europe suffering from self induced vaccine hesitancy and lower vaccination rates, having us lot over could create real problems for them.

We have to live with this virus and want to get travelling, and are now largely free of risk of severe disease, but each government has to protect its citizens as its primary function.

How are these citizens putting food on the table for their families?

Or are you comfortable with starvation and hardship as collateral damage?

Two examples would be Greece or Spain. The people inthese countries are really in big hardship. Their economy is heavily based on tourism, and they have been already suffering from the lack of local spending since 2009. I am personally aware of people in both Greece and Spain, hardly finding money to put food on the table, seriously.

Hopefully some changes to the traffic light system soon and then actually using things like the amber watch list and we can get things moving again.

We were booked for Dominican Republic for the end of July, but it's still on the FCO advice against travel list, so decided to flip to elsewhere in the Caribbean. Looked at Barbados, Granada and St Lucia.
TUI had zero availability for Barbados on our dates, so I guess it's because of the quarantine measures in place.
We've booked St. Lucia, and can't wait. Counting the days. Hoping for an added bonus of it going green today..

Sorry but I've got zero sympathy with her politics, whatsoever. She was the first moral queen to open her borders to refugees a few years ago, and put her citizens into some serious concerns with that...and now not allowing U.K. citizens/residents without quarantine even though they are double vaccinated?

Please... Get her retirement plans sooner perhaps. rolleyes

I've got flights booked for Barbados on August 3rd. Quarantine on arrival can be for a little as 12 hours apparently. It all depends how quickly the test results can be turned around. Let's see what any updates bring.

Just finished chatting with German friend - he states that their is plenty of support in Germany for this move. As for other countries - a couple of points to bear in mind - not everyone works in tourism and UK tourists are not the only source of income - pent up demand from the rest of Europe won't replace UK tourism income but will mitigate the losses - so I do expect others to follow suit.

Massive influx of German tourists to the holiday destinations at the moment, was reading in Sunday Times that there are currently 10 flights a day from Düsseldorf to Palma.

Need to ensure there’s less competition for the sunbeds.

My niece is a German resident and off to Spain Sunday for a fortnight to avoid the 10 day quarantine by arriving from the UK.

Whole system seems a bit bonkers.

Ok, let me clear a few things up. I've travelled quite a bit over the last couple of weeks / months.

Re. Checking of PLFs, yes they check every single one, just not with a great deal of scrutiny. I've been through stating exemption to quarantine based on work reasons and/or regular work outside of the UK, on occasion not even booking a test package (I would have been in the UK less than 2 days). Never questioned in any detail at all, but they do expect you to have one filled out.

LFT tests are fine for coming back into the UK, don't waste your money on PCR testing.

A couple of countries have now adopted the double vaccinate = no quarantine approach, including France and Switzerland, expect Germany and Italy to follow in short order. Once the government allows it in the UK then visits to Spain, Portugal etc will all be on the cards. At the moment things change so quickly (UK was put on the Swiss st list at the end of May and is now due to open up for double vaccinated people on June 28th).

Once you're in Schengen zone its very very easy to move about, as long as you remember to fill out the respective PLFs for the countries you're going to and check the respective entry requirements, checks are ad-hoc at best.

Any questions, feel free to ask as I keep a pretty close eye on it.

On another note, I had a fantastic weekend of cycling and hiking last weekend in the Swiss Alps. I'll stick a couple of pictures up later.
When you say the LFT, do you just have to show the stick thing with a negative result?

Merkel is urging all EU countries to make UK visitors quarantine! Summer holidays seem more and more unlikely, although I can’t see the likes of Portugal, Spain and particularly Greece listening to what she says.
Johnson and co. are maxing out the ‘’cases’’ in the UK the moment in the hope that other countries will reject the toxic Brits and save him having to be the bad guy yet again. Let’s hope the other countries see though this manufactured variant casedemic bks and continue to allow us in.
According to the DM, Macron is now following Merkel. And so Johnson’s plan takes shape. Being a nice chap he’ll allow us to travel but we won’t be allowed to enter these countries if he keeps up this casedemic nonsense.

Surely that's an unintended consequence rather than a plan taking shape?

Why on earth would that be his plan?

The main reason we are seeing an increase in ‘cases’ is because they are ‘surge testing’ particular regions and communities. There is bugger all increase in hospitalisations or deaths.

Testing has become a political instrument. Reduce testing and the number of ‘cases’ drops. The opposite is happening presently.

Why on earth would Handcock and Johnson be doing this? To extend the lockdown perhaps? It worked 10 days ago as an excuse. Prevent the plebs from travelling abroad perhaps because other countries don’t want high risk Brits perhaps?

You tell me what his plan is….

They don't have a coherent plan and they never have a fk about the plebs. It's a bunch of fkwits who thought they could give it large about vaccines and fked it with the Indian variant.

But people are lapping it up and will vote for them in their droves.

I don’t believe anyone can be this incompetent for so long without a motive or a plan.
