I solo ski & always catered chalet (not looking so plentiful this season?).
I pick a bigger chalet in the hope there will be multiple groups who don’t know each other, so less chance of feeling a hanger on to a family holiday!
It’s a long evening to fill in on your own, so having a structure of a dinner & drinks round a table & a hot tub to use does help. Rarely will I ski with anyone from the chalet, sometimes I will go out for drinks though.

We stayed in a friend’s chalet a few years ago overlapping a couple of days with a solo male Brit skier.
My girls have been skiing since they were three; one now has an instructor qualification, and the other could have if she could be bothered. They have been quite useful since pre teen years. They were either 12/14 or 13/15 when this took place.
The solo male suggested we ski together. The obvious subtext was “you lot can ski with me if you can”. I could tell by the mess of half undone zips, boot clips flapping and skis carried the wrong way round that this was going to be fun.
We let him choose our lift up the mountain, and then all got our kit together at the top. Mr Solo puffed his chest out and without asking decided to lead off down the nearest slope.
Knowing smiles were exchanged. “Go get him, girls”, I said They set off like a pair of hungry Dobermans, whipping past him on both sides in full on proper racing tucks at roughly twice his speed.
We regathered at the lift queue and were told that he was heading down to have his skis checked.
Solo skiers can be fun! But don’t be *that* solo skier.

I did used to do group lessons, & whilst appreciate that you do come on faster 1-1, a weeks morning lessons cost the same as one 1-1 session.
Skiing on my own I don’t find boring at all, I love just changing my mind on route or deciding to do a particular run again (& sometimes again). If I’m on my own I also ski a lot more (about 100km/day) as there’s no waiting or discussing. I know 3 Valleys very well & rarely need to consult a piste map. Not sure how I’d be elsewhere!

I tend to use HOFNAR for my solo trips for similar rasons, just safe in the knowledge that most people in the chalet won't know each other either. From a random group of 12ish solo skiers there's always someone who's in to the same sort of both skiing and apres skiing as you - though with no pressure to ski with others if you don't want to.I pick a bigger chalet in the hope there will be multiple groups who don’t know each other, so less chance of feeling a hanger on to a family holiday!

BC has recently announced the requirement for covid passports at some events (including restaurants) from September and has reintroduced mandatory masks when indoors from today. It's not over yet.

Alberta has also reintroduced restrictions throughout the province. Masks are to be worn indoors, bars/restaurants are to stop serving alcohol at 10PM, recommendations of a max of two families and/or ten people in a gathering. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/places-require-bc-...

All from 4th September.
(Seriously, it's not over)

I wouldn't be booking anything any significant time in advance this season...All from 4th September.

Yeah, we have been discussing our Whistler holiday. I have the option to cancel the hotel with no loss until Xmas and to be honest, we suspect that is exactly what I will be doing. I haven’t booked the flights yet, so no biggie there. Bit of a shame, never had such a good deal on the Fairmont, but c’est la vie.
Friends have just had their visits to Miami in Nov cancelled and it is becoming more and more obvious that the North American continent is going to be a right pain for at least another 6months. As a result, we are now thinking that we hold off any NA trips till more this time next yr and look at doing New England in the Fall.

Isn’t a risk of solo skiing that if anything were to happen to you no one would be missing you : able to report your missing on the slopes (you may have no cellular reception too). Well today's announcement is a bit wk....
We're skiing over xmas with two under 16's and expected them to be able to have the vaccination in time before we go. UK decides to only give one dose but French require two in over-12's to avoid PCR tests.

Missed this. I almost never ski on my own. Either with people from the chalet or from the ski school. And if I do ski on my own then I always tell someone from the hotel or a friend where I’m going. I also have a spot transponder that I use generally to track where I’ve been which can also sen help

It’s really not a big issue, my kids had to take tests before going away this summer. All very painless and straightforward. Isn’t a risk of solo skiing that if anything were to happen to you no one would be missing you : able to report your missing on the slopes (you may have no cellular reception too). Do I go off piste, or even onto an officially marked but not monitored free-ride area when skiing solo? No.
Do I happily ski on-piste solo? Sure - though I also tend to stick to the more core areas/runs, ski less aggressively, and make sure someone knows what time I'm due back. One thing I realise I often forget to do is carry emergency contact details in an obvious pocket - must make a note to tighten up on that.
Keep to the popular runs and you know someone should either see you wipe out or find you before too long, or worst case the pisteurs will find you when they sweep the runs at the end of the day. This DOES leave the risk of to cocking up when nobody else is watching and shoot off into the trees and out of sight - but that's why I ease off and make solo days laid back cruising days where you take the time to stop and look t the magic around you.
