Barley Mow isn't the best place really.

At great Heywood there is a nice cafe by the canal and farmshop.

Not sure your route but Weston has Saracen's head and Woolpack which is nice village to enjoy a pint in.

I have to work out a route from great haywood to draycott in the moors which avoids main roads if possible. Weston is on one of the possible routes at the moment I think.

if it was me probably follow canal then shoot off somewhere. I guess that is what makes it interesting you have so many choices really and might stubble on places.

It is weird how used to cars we have become, walking used to be the norm.

Its quite a complicated stage. Trying to formulate a route using OS maps and google maps on a phone screen is doing my head in. I think you’re right - just head off in the right direction and hope for the best. Weston then maybe Coton then see how it goes.

Ah, I was thinking of the other canal - there are two close together in your vicinity.

Are you going up the canal towards Stafford tomorrow? There are pubs in Penkridge and the Moat House hotel at Acton Trussell has a nice bar, but all probably a bit early in the day. There’s a really nice Wimpy at Milford on the edge of Cannock Chase; you may laugh at the suggestion but it’s a little chalet which is in a pretty location.
Yes I’m heading to Great Haywood tomorrow. I had actually noticed the Wimpey on google maps. Good to have it recommended. Thinks there's a pub called Barley Mow but looks a bit further from the canal and the website looks a bit uninspiring.
Stan Cullimore of The Housemartins was there the other day. You may like a listen to this, for geographical relevance!

great recommendation for the Wimpy. I think I was expecting a proper restaurant. I’ve not seen a Wimpy setup like that before - a small booth selling takeaway with a few tables outside. Popped into use the toilets next door in the Barley Mow and glad I didn’t eat there.

Now having dinner in the Clifford Arms in Great Haywood - 5 mins from the campsite. Nice pub and a good selection of beers.

Glad you enjoyed it - it's a fun little place and the staff seem to care about how they prepare the food, so it's nicer than the eat-in Wimpy I tried recently.

Sorry that's where my suggestions dwindle; my stamping ground stops at the Trent (or probably the Sow)!

I think I have a reasonable route today into Draycott in the Moors. Only slight concern is how busy or walkable is the last stretch along Cresswell Road / Sandon Road into Cresswell. Apart from that stretch all looks pretty quiet.

Loving the updates!

How are your feet doing?
How do you decide how many miles to do each day?

No problems with the feet - got a good pair of trail shoes/ trainers.

I have a range of mileage I’m happy with - from 14 ish to 19 or so. Sometimes go beyond that but it all depends on accommodation.

As expected the first 12 miles today was a nice quiet mix of canal, footpaths and lanes. I couldn’t find a way around Cresswell road so the last 3 miles was along a two lane with no footpath. Traffic was fast but not heavy so I could walk on the road a lot and just hop onto the verge now and then.

Despite the names of quite a few villages on the route, only one had a pub and none had shops - in fact I’m not sure some had houses. The one pub was a belter - Green Man in Milwich. Not sure why they had a log fire going though when it was so sunny outside. Campsite tonight is someone’s back garden.

Don’t want to count my chickens but todays route looks good. A river walk from Cheadle to Cheddleton. PH sign on the map at Cheddleton so hopefully get there about lunchtime. Then footpath all the way to Leek. Just got the last few miles to the campsite to find.

But for now a breakfast in a great Italian cafe in Cheadle.

And the sun’s out again.

Famous locally is the Black Lion at Consall, on the canal about half-way for you. You can only access it on foot or by boat!

And for tonight, maybe the Hollybush at Denford. Also on the canal, tho’ it turns a bit westwards after Cheddleton just after the Leek branch veers off.
Good luck for the weekend as you climb up into the Peak District.

And for tomorrow/Mon the ‘spoons in Buxton is quite good and located on the river Wye/gardens away from the town centre, tho’ it’s Bank Holiday weekend (I guess you’ve forgotten such things?!)

I’ll look forward to investigating. Sometimes you don’t need a pub. A bench by a pond with a bottle of water and a Snickers will do just fine.

Proof that I don’t just stop at pubs.

It was packed when I arrived - maybe sunny bank holiday crowd. Soon quietened down and got a table outside. Maybe two nights without showers helped. For the sake of comparison I stopped for a half at the Boat Inn near Cheddleton. Both very good pubs.
