It's been an awful weekend for Tui. They were already stretched before half-term, but this has just finished them off.

They only have so many planes, so many crew, and this year seem to have no slack in their service built-in. All of these delays getting airplanes away mean that their timetable is completely screwed and so is their crewing plan. All they can do is make plans on the hoof as best they can until the wheels fall off and they have to start canceling.

They canceled in Doncaster after putting in hotels overnight. So that's a refund, hotels plus compensation. It's not pretty.

Very impressed.

Malaga departures hand-luggage belt-of-doom is one of the worst designed security hell holes in europe biggrin

Flying with Tui from MAN on Thursday just lol

we are equipping ourselves for the worst.

Might be time to rename the topic 'Manchester Airport. Can it get any worse?'

Wishing you good luck!

Seems they were having issues again today

We come back from Croatia on Thursday so am anticipating a long wait at the airport - last weeks flight was 6 hours late leaving Dubrovnik……….

The issue as highlighted on the other thread is a combination of things each of which has a knock on effect.Especially crew hours and rest periods

My airport experience gets better.
Apparently T1 restaurants are the place to do your covid testing.
Not sure if a positive test is what we're all hoping for lol
Gets better he's drinking corona lol

So Berlin was fantastic, only real downside is it seems to all be closed on a Sunday.
I did find a place called liquidrom, which is a funky spa.
Plays dance music whilst you float around. Saunas and a small outdoor pool. Don't try if your afraid of a bit of nudity, takes a minute to recalibrate when your getting changed in what is a mixed locker room lol.

Now in Berlin Airport.
It's spotless, security was simple.
Lots of room everywhere.
Easy to find seats.
Looking forward to Manchester given none of us has hold baggage so potentially easy. Fingers crossed
Landed in Manchester T1 at 11.30ish today.
Small 10 minute delay sat in the plane whilst they found some ground crew to let us out.

Then a maze of corridors to get us to security.
It reinforces that Manchester Airport is outdated.

Credit due other than the maze and several flights of stairs both up and down we were out pretty quickly.
Little or no queues.

The fun started when we got to Toad Parking.
Car had been damaged and the assistant manager wasn't for accepting damage.

It was made clear it was done in there car park and that pictures were taken when the car was left.
They checked CCTV and acknowledged they caused the damage.

Shouldn't have had to escalate the complaint to get them to take responsibility.
So i would highly recommend taking pictures of your car upon arrival in any long stay parking facility.

Parked the car at T2 multi-storey at 9am, cleared security 40 minutes later. Apparently it was rammed a couple of hours earlier but all fine for us and also pretty clear in departures. No problems grabbing a coffee.

We were due to fly out of Manchester, at 6am tomorrow morning for our friends wedding next week, got an email last night, saying that the whole holiday has been cancelled (TUI), spoke to someone this morning, they are now looking to fly us out there on Sunday at the earliest, but may need to leave from Leeds or East Midlands!!

Reading all the stories it seems like the entire travel industry is in some form of implosion.

Is it really just down to staffing issues?

Yes but the causes vary from airport to airport and airline to airline.

Some airlines are short of air crew
Some airports are short of security staff
Some handling companies at the airport are short of baggage loaders, gate staff, checkin staff etc

Obviously delays and knock on delays from the above can make any airline short of available aircraft and crew so they have to cancel flights to protect the rest of their flying program.

The staff shortages are caused by delays in getting airport IDs lack of british people wanting to do certain jobs and some employers getting rid of too many people during the pandemic.

Some of the queues pictured are also down to people understandably turning up too early so the airport and check in are having to deal with more passengers than normal regardless of whether they’re fully staffed or not.

So yes it’s mainly about having enough employees but there’s also a panic element going on and also issues caused by knock on delays.

Airports aren’t all in chaos though and it varies massively depending on airline, airport, time of day etc.

It’s just that the photos of queues get shared and remembered more on here and in the media than the posts where people say they went on a flight and there wasn’t any extra disruption.

El Stovey - do you know how long it takes to the correct ID for a new starter?

Is there a group of people just waiting to fill the gap or are we in a situation that will take a long time to sort out?

Yes there is, I’d expect everything to be back to normal (whatever that is) by the start of the main summer holidays. I think it will also improve immediately after May half term when demand reduces.

I’m not sure at the moment how long an airside ID takes but I’d expect it’s at least a couple of weeks from start to finish. There’s the disclosure Scotland criminal check, possibly getting and checking references plus some admin from the applicant and the employer. It’s quicker if you’re renewing one but a new ID is a bit of a ball ache and bits of it have to be done in person with appointments at airport ID units etc.

Not sure it’s available publicly, if you say an airport and time I might be able to have some info but remember that won’t cover something like how many people are working in security or how many people have turned up early for check in on your airline.

Like anything there’s a wealth of data available but obviously I’m not some 24 hour delay controller covering all airports.

I’ve basically got an app for work called ‘airport community’ that gives different data for different airports as they’re all run by different people and have different data being recorded.

What IS available publicly is things like airport departures or flight radar 24 which will show you how many flights each airline has from that airport at that time. That might give you an idea of potential issues but again it’s all hit and miss at the moment.

Many airports also have their own apps which may also show some more of this kind of data,

If I’m at work or positioning (with work) through an airport myself I just use normal timings but I’ve got an ID so I swan around like I own the place and use my charm to push in get through quicker.

I think if you’re at the airport already and you’re delayed in check in or security and your flight’s going you will usually get called forwards through security but maybe that’s not always the case. Sure there’s disruption and going on and the whole airport thing at the start of a holiday can be stressful at the best at times but it’s not as bad everywhere as is made out and the amount of cancellations is still very small.

Am not looking forward to flying out of Birmingham on a Saturday morning in August! I've just checked their departures board, they have 20(!!!) flights scheduled to depart at 06:00 tomorrow. How's that work then?

Thanks. Had a feeling it would be something for staff only.

In my case its more of a commute than a holiday so less stressful insofar as it doesn't really matter if I miss a flight (albeit disappointing) but it will be a ball ache if I have to regularly allow extra time in the airport due to frequency.

Badly I'd suggest! I wish you luck
