Hi all looking for some advise a few of us are looking to do a road trip to the alps and Germany. It seems the French have the closest alps so was originally going to drive through France. But not sure weather to go Austrian alps instead. At least this way we would mostly be driving in Germany (autobahn😁) idea was alps first then black forest and on to Nuremberg (the ring) looking to do about 4-5 days
Thanks

I’ve planned a 7 day trip down to the Swiss Alps this summer. Troyes - Lake Annecy - Grindelwald - Baden Baden.

One night in each location except Grindelwald where we have 3 nights. Sensible amounts of driving each day.

Remember that Nuremberg is quite a way away from the Nurburgring.

Assume you meant Nurburgring not Nuremberg?
If so, Calais to Nurburgring is pretty straightforward in a day.

Baden-Baden is good stop in Black Forest (there are other lovely little towns/villages) en route to the Alps for a couple of nights.

On your way back you could stop at Stuttgart for the Porsche Museum.

Then maybe stop in Champagne region for your last night.

Lots of options. Personally I’d try to make the trip 7 days rather than 4-5 but understand time is limited.

Thanks for your reply’s we all live south east london area and I was thinking of getting the furthest destination done first. Then make our way back towards Black Forest and then on to the ring. Just didn’t know what would be the best and possibly shortest distance to the alps. Properly looking to go in June time as most alps roads don’t open until then.
Thanks again

I don't know if my thread might help from a few years ago? I included stopovers and costs.

Great write up and lovely trip.

Interesting about the Alps passes. Have heard similar elsewhere: some are better than others for various reasons and need to start very early to make the best of them.

I’ll be poodling slowly around a few of them in my wife’s Mini Convertible in July, from our base in Grindelwald, but will be going solo and back before my wife is ready for breakfast!

Re the OP point about getting to the Alps in one day, definitely doable if time is against you. Just need to keep to the motorways and pay the tolls to make good progress. Although I’d guess it’s still going to be a 12 hour slog with minimal breaks and no hold ups.

By the way I’m around south east London also. The Channel Tunnel is great for us and so easy to get to/from of course.

And if you’ve low profile tyres do book in the high vehicles option so it’s a bit wider and you’ll not be sweating when driving onto the train!

Thanks, you’re very kind! I’ve just read it back myself - so many good memories of that trip. Pootling around in a Mini with the roof down and sun out will be wonderful.

To the OP - you’ll have a great time! Try not to overdo the driving though, it can get a bit tiring.

550 miles a day is possible on autoroutes in France, but in the the Alps my limited experience says 150-200 miles is a full day. Allow for traffic on the main routes and congestion on some Autobahns too. And allow plenty of spare time for track closures if you plan a Ring Taxi trip or similar. 5 days is a bit tight.

Four to five days for that sounds like an absolute nightmare. If it was me, then I would go to Colmar, experience the lovely villages and roads around there, then hop across to Freiburg, stay somewhere like Todtnau for the Black Forest, then up to somewhere like Cochem on the Moselle which is in easy reach of the Ring.
