Off to Obergurgl on Saturday with my new Burton Step on boots and bindings, it's a total blizzard there today. Can't wait.

Shoot me down for laziness here, but my particular (slightly sad) circumstances mean I'm at liberty to go skiing next week somewhere, and looking for suggestions/info. Will drive, stay Sunday - Thurs, skiing Mon-Fri.

Austria is my go-to thanks to happy memories and these days, local architecture offering many single rooms. I can hold my own (Carv Ski IQ 130 fwiw laugh) but I'm not adaptable and strongly prefer well sighted pistes, the flatter the better. No fan of slush then, but I think I'd take slush over no visibility (I fall over a lot in both, but more in low vis).

Struggling to find consistency across many forecasts in the Voralberg/Tirol regions next week. Ischgl improved markedly at lunchtime today, I struggle to believe the Lech/St Anton forecasts given how nearby they are. I'm not up on ski-down resorts* further east than that (yet).

So, any 'reliable' forecast sites anybody uses? Reckon I ought to find somewhere in 3V (or elsewhere in France) instead? I'm all ears smile

Woken this morning to heavy snowfall - continuing - with about 15 cm in the village now. There was no snow at all when I went to bed last night.
Please let me know what the local outlook is - Ischgl's only over the hill from you smile

Thx all,
Nick

FWIW, I love Ishgl, and flying to Friedrichshafen with BA and renting a car there was cheap and easy to do last minute, at least pre COVID...

From memory, it's a bit less intermediate than places like Solden, which may or may not be a good thing for you...a ski IQ of 130 means you can ski!!

Courchevel 1850.

Courchevel tends to have the best piste-bashed slopes in the 3V's imo. You can get up really high. The base resort being circa 1800m gives you a good chance of minimal slush for the run back 'home'. Plenty of wide pistes with easy/modest pitch (if that is what you want to ski).

Only issue is the cost, but you aren't going in a peak week.

This is a great shout. And you can bust over to VT too.

Thanks both, hugely appreciated - sounds very much up my street (wide/modest pitch works for me currently).

Some eye-watering rates being asked in 1850 even now (drawback of flying solo I guess), but some potential options too. I've timed out this evening but will try to get off the pot tomorrow. smile

There are many cheaper places to stay in 3V and ski the exact same pistes. Just about anywhere in fact…

Kinda true. Except if someone is saying things like they particularly want "well sighted pistes, the flatter the better", they say imply they are not overly confident in more variable conditions, then you might consider the type of run back to resort and the likely condition of those runs.

For example, I have stayed in Meribel twice this season, and I'm going again next week, but the runs down to Meribel centre in the afternoon are often not in the best condition, can be very busy, and can also be icy. Whereas the Courchevel side tends to stay in better condition imo. Plus, if there is bad weather the links might not always be open, so you then have to ski in the 'home' valley. And in Courchevel, the runs below 1850 (whilst brilliant) can get soft.

In terms of cost, if someone mentions other places they are considering like Lech, it gives an indication of budget. Clearly though there are plenty of options for differing budgets.

consider any of the courchevel villages, there are very regular/ efficient busses running between them (worst case) and decent lift/ runs between them all. for instance 1300/ le praz has 1 bubble straight into the main 1850 bowl.

my favourite village is 1650, some really good cruisey runs in the section of the resort, plus the bars/ restaurants are still reasonable (ski holiday reasonable) prices and not all high end/ michelin star places! if your not fussed on standard of accommodation have a look at ‘sun web’ as i think they do apartments in 1650. very cheap and cheerful, but decent price when you consider the lift pass is included

Had my week in Banff and got back on Sunday.
It’s a long way to go for a week, and I wouldn’t do that again. At 6’2” scrunched up in economy for 9 hours each way - was not good fun.
Slopes were fantastic and the scenery was breath taking.
I thought Banff was quiet and soulless. The food was bland and rather pricey for what it was. Soup, burger and 2 small beers was £41:80 on the slopes.
Hoping for better snow in the Alps next year.

I agree on Banff, and Sunshine is in a similar vein. For me, Canadian skiing is all about the west.

Whistler is obviously great, but Revelstoke for the big stuff is the best skiing I have ever had.

That travel for a week is OK, but I'm used to it for work, would burn Avios points for an upgrade...and am also a lot shorter than you!

Can't say I'm enjoying the ever changing forecast.....yesterday my week looked like it was turning into a fair bit of sun, today has changed back to mostly cloud and snow.

Yes, I know I should stop looking. But I can't.

British Columbia Interior is fantastic. 7 Metres of snow so far at Silver Star. Always 2 weeks minimum for us because of the distance. It's an extra slog from Scotland, three flights, four airports, sometimes 23-24 hrs travel. But well worth it.

I give it 2 days before you're stood with the skiers at the top of each chair tutting about having to wait for classic, strap in borders smile

Landing at Friedrichshafen because Innsbruck is fog bound and half the flights are being diverted there is a nightmare - but use it intentionally when Innsbruck is fine and it's one of the nicest airports anywhere.

Absolutely. So small and informal, and an easy drive to the Tirol. Car hire way cheaper than Innsbruck, too.

And Lake Constance is always worth a visit. I fondly remember family holidays there as a kid, with Dad's German friends from his time living there.

I hope so, playing with the new step in system at home it does seem really really good. Not cheap mind, but my old boots had sprung a leak anyway.

I'll agree on lake Constance too, we stayed in a hotel on the lake years ago for an 'ifm' factory visit, back in the good old days, they looked after us really well, lovely part of Germany.

Was skiing with some friends at half term where the husband always used to complain about his wife taking too long to strap back in. She now had step ins and took much joy in telling him to hurry up off of every chair biggrin

Love skiing the Rockies and always go for two weeks as no point for one week.
Scenery is breathtaking.
I love the soulless Banff,Fernie and Co and bland food.

Always snow never comes to our mind that there maybe no snow.
8 1/2 hour flight direct from LHR don’t see it a problem.

Each to their own though.
