Gi full Self Catering and car in canaries to avoid the council vibe.

BBQ's in your garden, pool time, 82 dodgy sky channels (22 for viewing in the evenings wink)

yes +1 for Canaries self catering. It's the only way.

Pick up a car from the airport, stay in a detached villa in a small village, shop with the locals and go to remote beaches.

Never a tattoo or football strip in sight and the only time you have to mix it with the Councilists then is on the aircraft.

We have just returned from a week in Tenerifie in Costa Adeje.
My short review. You really can't beat this place for weather. I think we were lucky as apparently there is was a wind blowing up from Africa bringing very warm air with it (it had a name which I forget). So 30 degrees in late March is fairly unusual apparently. Usually it's 23-25 ish.
However, I must say since the last time we were there 8 years ago, things have changed a little. It's sadly now more than ever the council holiday destination of choice.
So think football shirts, tattoos, massive beer guts, swearing, Northerners, and general thuggish behaviour a plenty. We did drive to the north and it seemed a little less Blackpool on sea that side.
I would say unless you're the sort who spends all day in Weatherspoons getting ever more drunk, the bigger southern areas are probably best avoided.
Luckily we had a car all week and ventured to the hidden gems these people don't go to.
We had a lovely time only using the hotel as a base (hotel Playaolid for reference).
Southern wkers, coming to the affordable resorts in their deck shoes and Panama hats thinking they own the place.

wink

My thoughts..others may vary.

Gran Canaria. As an island its greener so on the whole a prettier island. Beaches in the south stunning, massive dunes etc. Bit of a bh with a push chair though. If you like a bit of life then Playa de Inglish (sp). A bit Brits abroad though. But if that offends you then next door is Maspalomas which is better for quality restaurants and a more upmarket atmosphere but much quieter. Up the road is Morgan. Too purpose built for me and a bit isolated although it is well done.

Tenerife. More desolate, more volcanic. Mount Tiede is well worth a visit. Feels like being on the moon. Beaches generally man made in the big resorts. Main one being Playa de las Americas. Has been slagged off in the past but they have put some serious investment into it over last ten years so it is very clean with good night life and choice. Assuming you don't mind the occasional Elvis impersonator. Sorta mid way quality wise between Maspalomas and Beach of the English in Gran Canaria above.

Just my thoughts but I prefer Morro Jable in the south of Fuerteventura personally. But I'm older.

Thing is the right room in the right hotel in the worst resort can often be much better than the wrong room in the wrong hotel in the best resort. What ever best and worse is for you.

What I do

These days the power of the internet means you can usually get things pretty perfect.

Book car hire, flights and accommodation separately. That way especially by booking accommodation direct you can choose your exact room. One with the best view and not overlooking the car park. You can decide on sun in the morning, afternoon or all day etc. Car hire always all inclusive on the insurance and there's quite often some deals to be had. Last time I picked up an Audi Q2 for the price of a Fiat Panda. Flights independently means you can get your travel times right. For me it's early departure but slightly later return. I really don't want an evening return where you're kicked out of your room and spend the whole day hanging around. Up, breakfast, leisurely drive to airport is the way to go.

As said above but I'd go to Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura.
Cheap flights.
Book a hire car and you're 5 minutes from Caleta or ten minutes on the bus for under 3 Euros each.
Book an apartment in the lower part of the resort which all have their own pool and kids pool.

Why?
Because child friendly beach,
flat so easy to walk round,
compact resort so never far to walk,
easy to park your hire car for free,
nice ice-cream,
several little kids parks and
along the promenade you have practically tame "chipmunks" (Barbary Ground Squirrels) to keep the three year old totally enthralled.

Go to The Trafalgar and you can have a 3 egg omelette with 2 fillings, chips and salad for 6 Euros.

what's your budget, do you want to stay in a hotel or apartments, what star rating and do you need all-inclusive?

Did Caleta for the first visit on FV last time and it was bearable (but no kids then). Beach was rather big and felt a bit artificial, but kids will love it.

We went the week Angelina Jolie was about to arrive for the filming of some Xmen film.

The Bar/Restaurant at the end of the jetty did a nice seafood platter and cocktails in Caleta.

Went there crikey, must have been 20 years ago when all the building was going on the west side of the beach. We looked at a nice bungalow/house. Price was £64k. The mussels at that restaurant were to die for.

Puerto de la Cruz is hard to beat. It’s about an hours drive round the motorway or 2 hours over the mountain, beautiful town with lots of lovely coffee shops and restaurants. The pool complex at the waterfront is fantastic too.
So very impressed with PDLC, the total opposite of the south of the island. The food choice was amazing and a really pretty town in places. Highly recommened to anyone who wants a more chilled experience
I'm headed there in a few weeks' time so delighted to hear what you're both saying.
