I haven't been on the ferry since the tunnel opened, but - booked for a shopping trip. Cheers for the info
And…

P&O have cancelled the ferry on Tuesday and kindly rebooked me on a crossing that arrives in Calais at 3pm. For a day trip with lunch in Calais

Never trying that again

I've been on the normal Eurotunnel carriages including top deck in many cars including a McLaren 12C, BMW 750i, Porsche 996 GT2 and 997 GT2 without any trouble, so the concerns are overstated IMHO. The edges of the walkways are curved and smooth and no problem if touched by a tyre, they're not jagged concrete!

I've only been on the wide/tall coaches once in a very wide and lifted off-road 4x4 and whilst there is far more space, you lose the toilets in each carriage and if you need one it can be a very long walk, as they are only at the very ends of the entire train.

That would have piffed me right off and it isn’t going to make them many friends, but to be fair I doubt they would have done it for no reason.

I have done three ‘wine’ day trips in recent months, the 6 crossings were all on time.

When you enter the number plates of those types of cars to book a crossing the system will no longer allow them on to the normal carriages.

Low ground clearance and wide sports cars

We may detect that your vehicle (despite being under the 1.85 meters high) is better suited to our Single Deck shuttles due to its low ground-clearance, width, or scissor/gull-wing doors.

Our Single Deck shuttles can accommodate wider vehicles, and do not require driving up the ramps to the upper deck during loading.
It might be useful if they shared the list of models they consider unsuited to the normal shuttle

Easy enough to find out, once you put your reg number in it either comes up as a "High Car" or not.

I think they have gone down the list of makes and picked out the ones they know will swallow it.

Eurotunnel have finally turned the Day Trip & Overnight tickets back on - lucky us.

Only between 25/9/2023 and 22/10/2023 mind you so don't get too excited.

At around £125 return an absolute bargain
Well, I don't how much they would have to charge to make you think it was expensive!

£125? Ludicrous amount of money!

Even quicker way I just found, if you have a Eurotunnel account - look under My Stored Information / Vehicles

PORSCHE | CAYMAN | CAR OVER 6FT / 1.85M | UK Registered
but
SUBARU | FORESTER | CAR UNDER 6FT / 1.85M | UK Registered
FORD | FIESTA | CAR UNDER 6FT / 1.85M | UK Registered

They are definitely not doing it scientifically.

I just tried a Macan and a Panamera and they also were only offered wide/low. So it's all Porsches.

So a massive current model Range Rover can go in the normal carriage, but a much smaller Macan cannot.

My suspicion is it may be based on number of complaints by brand over scratching alloys on ultra-low profile tyres, when drivers fail to keep to the driving track (?)

£125 return is good value for money, granted it’s more than it used to be, Tunnel Mont Blanc and the Sweden/Denmark bridge are similar in price.

Train to London (40mins) is more than that for my family of four.

However DFDS are doing 39£ day trips again (+ kids eat free on board), and doing a free day trip if you spend £150 with them. So Easter time day trips to Le Touquet and Brugge are currently going in the diary.

Given how unhelpful Eurotunnel are generally I would be amazed they entertained many such claims.

If people cannot drive it is hardly their fault, but a great excuse for them to charge a bit more for providing the same service.
The extra they are charging would pay to repair one rim on every single Porsche crossing - no extra profit there then. Plus all the other prestige brands on top.

As I said a couple of pages back

just did it again with my daughter's Ford Fiesta and the price is still from £86 return, compared to £100 for the Cayman.
I don’t think that £14 is going to go far against an alloy wheel repair (well not at Lepsons, who I use)

I see that you're still banging that conspiracy drum. rofl

I've just done another ticket price search for random dates in May. For the same train times in both scenarios a day trip ticket return is £8 more expensive in the single deck carriage over the double deck.

With a 5 day short stay return ticket, the single deck carriage was £24 more expensive than the double deck.

If anyone else can think of a simpler way to explain it to him so he may stand half a chance of getting it be my guest.

Let me try

Eurotunnel have now classified some makes of car, including the OP's Boxster, as high/wide vehicles, presumably because they are fed up with complaints about scratched alloys or scraped spoilers when using dual-deck carriages. Those vehicles are now automatically booked onto single deck carriages at a small premium (£14 for the day return ticket that I checked). There are fewer spaces in the single deck carriages, so a higher chance that a given crossing will be sold out of non-flexi tickets, especially at short notice

OP is not happy, and represents this as Eurotunnel charging flexi prices for his car

That's about the gist of it.

The best bit was comparing the costs of a Flexi ticket with a day trip ticket, and presenting this as a conspiracy gotcha. hehe
