If you fancy Turkey but without the worry, and given that you like Cyprus, try the north of Cyprus.

There's some stunning resorts along the Bafra coast near Famagusta and plenty off site to go and see and do. Plus it's significantly cheaper than the south.

depends on whether or not you have a social conscience. Personally, I would never holiday in (or visit) Turkey or Northern Cyprus.
I've worked on a couple of projects in the north since 2016. Have been there many times (twice this year already!). You really can't lump Turkey and the north of Cyprus in the same boat. If social conscience requires you to boycott a nation for the manner in which the Cypriots have been treated then you need to put the UK on that list too along with Greece.

I've done a lot of the Greek islands. Crete, Cyprus, Zante, Lesbos, Rhodes to name a few.

I have also been to Northern Cyprus and Dalyan in Turkey. Can't say I would rush back.

I guess if you are looking for an all inclusive gig, then Turkey will be as good as any.

We are not pool/beach/sunbed people and normally hire a car in Greece to visit archeological sites. We didn't do this in Turkey as there didn't seem to be much worth seeing. We did take the bus to the turtle beach, but didn't see any (out of season).

There are some marginal culture differences between Greece and Turkey. The Greeks are obviously more European and will generally not give a second glance to a scantily clad young girl walking down the high street.

I visit Turkey regularly, was in Istanbul, Ankara, Hatay and Gaziantep this month. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Generally, if something is going to go off, it'll be in Istanbul but very unusual for tourists to be targeted.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Some very interesting comments.

It’s probably worth adding that, as much as it galls me to say it, we’ll probably rarely, if ever, leave the hotel complex. The kids just aren’t interested in getting out and about, they just want to play in the pool and enjoy the facilities (we tried in Paphos last year and they didn’t stop bloody moaning).

As a result, it seems to me that going to a half decent all inclusive resort, you could be pretty much anywhere. That being the case, social conscience and the odd Russian aside, there doesn’t seem to be a significant reason not to entertain turkey if you can get better quality and value for money.

I've no idea about other places so maybe this is standard, but apparently it's common in Turkey not to heat the outdoor pools. We went in Sept and the pool was freezing. The good part is there was never anyone in it, so it was nice and quiet.

We go October most years to a hotel just outside Fethiye and love it.

Staff are great, food very good and we can stock up on genuine fakes smile

Mostly British with a few other nationalities mixed in including Germans, Scandies and Russians.
Lots of families and couples so it's a nice atmosphere.

We stayed in the Barut Kemer a couple years ago it was brilliant as AI goes - the specialist restaurants were terrific especially the Italian. Pools for all the family and right on the beach. We went with TUI and benefited from a couple of cancellations and the bonuses one got from them cancelling.

In fact it was 2020 so a bit longer ago than two years. The only drama was the small waiting room at the gate for the return flight - no social distancing but I didn't catch covid from it so all good!!

I would again without hesitation. Lovely place.

That’s good to know, thank you. I thought for a moment that was the hotel we’re interested in but it seems not. We’re looking at the Barut Hemera.

The only time I have been AI, and I was concerned about the chav element but luckily (considering we were there mid August) it was really family orientated and we made some good friends!

Maybe a little research?
you missed out on a lot:
Ephesus
Pamukkale
Gobekli tepe
Saklikent Gorge
some of the biggest and impressive sites in the world also on Unescos list.

Afrodisia, Cappodoccia Miletus, Didimaya, Temple of Halikarnasos
Turkey has an amazing amount of Roman History
along with some of the most complete Roman theatres in existence.
there are actual books listing all the sites all over.

We have holidayed a plenty in Turkey and even with young grandaughters (teenagers initially) we have never had cause for concern
anywhere we visited,
the weather is great from May till October only then cooling and only winter like in Jan/Feb.

there is a lot to see in a vast country.

As it was our first time, I've nothing to compare it to, but we stayed in a Barut hotel is Side and I have to say it was very impressed with everything about it.

As for chavs - we flew easyJet from Liverpool so there were plenty of them on the plane. I think my missus was one of only a few woman who didn't have duck lips! No idea where they were all staying - didn't see them again until the flight back.

Kaunos is literally across the river from Dalyan, along with the rock tombs that can be seen without even going to the other side, almost impossible not to see it.

I'm glad you posted that comment, I too thought Leptons post appallingly rude. Also what Ashfordian is suggesting is the complete opposite of 'woke', lol.

My Dad wouldn't go to Spain when Franco was in charge. If he was still here there's no way he'd be going to Turkey.

I happen to think Tarring all Russians and Turks with the same brush for something they have no control over is appalling rude, Xenophobic and Racist. Mind you, it’s not the first time I’ve seen you three posting leftist claptrap laugh

Have been 7 or 8 times to that area over the last 15 years. Always in AI resorts. Last time was last year. OK, yes there are Russian guests and they do confirm to a certain stereotype most of the time, but the resorts are great.

Can recommend Gloria Serenity or where we stayed last year which was the Gloria Verde Select Villas. There are 3 sister hotels all in close proximity with a golf course joining them..... Gloria Golf, Serenity and Verde. The Serenity is the most upmarket....however, the Verde Select Villa's are located within the Golf Course grounds close to the Verde hotel.... and somewhat secluded with their own pool, pool bar and local restaurant. You also get your own Villa golf buggy and open access to all 3 hotels including all their restaurants & amenities with the Select All Inclusive....so a huge choice. The Villa's have an upstairs double and a downstairs twin. Next time we go it will likely be just me and the missus in which case we'd choose Serenity.
