We're heading to Cambridge for a few days this week and wondered whether the IWM at Duxford would be worth a detour? Any other ideas on things to do in/around Cambridge this time of year would be much appreciated too. Ta v much!

Yes it's worth it if you are into that sort of thing.

Yes IWM is very good.

The Vulcan tour is overpriced but was pretty good, I was the only one that day so it was about twice as long and detailed as normal - recommend.

The US part of the museum is also excellent - SR-71 and B-52 etc. Incredible.

Yes, and if you are into that sort of thing, then the Shuttleworth Collection is also well worth a visit, about 30 mins out of Cambridge.

Very yes. but bear in mind its an all day place - its massive - you need to get there at opening and be the last one thrown out!

Horse racing museum in Newmarket is worth popping in if you have a spare afternoon - only 25 mins from camb. I'm not into horses or racing them, but for summat different it was quite good.

Also try the university museums of geology and animals and stuff - all free and quite a lot more interesting for my two teens than i imagined they'd be.

You've also got the American war memorial/cemetery just up the road.

Duxford is excellent, but very large and you have to walk outside between hangers. So not really the place for a quick visit or if the weather is terrible.

I agree with the above.

Not been for 2 or 3 years but keep meaning to go back.

My youngest was about 5 yrs when we went but plenty to keep even young ones interested.

As noted previously, the site is huge and there's a lot of walking. It really is a day long trip.

I went on a rainy day which wasn't ideal but certainly didn't spoil it either.

I keep meaning to go as its really not far from us and I am constantly buzzed by their WW2 stuff flying over the house (this is not a complaint having my own private airshow is fking awesome). Also turning 40 this year and seriously considering going up in a Spitfire as a present to myself.

My first trip was about 30years after moving just down the road from it, again was always on the list to visit but was until i was in my 30's that we actually visited

I've not been myself since the Airspace hangar was newly opened and have driven past far too many times without stopping over the years since.

I just checked and there is still a visitor bus service that runs the length of the site with stops outside each of the exhibitions..
Wrap up warm as it's likely to feel pretty chilly there later this week!

Thanks for all the info folks! Didn't go in the end as didn't have enough time to justify a full day. Hope to get a visit scheduled for the summer though - sounds awesome thumbup

Ezra, definitely go when it is not raining. It is a huge site and there will be more chance of seeing some interesting things flying. It is one of the few museums where my son was disappointed to leave. Also if you get the chance visit the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial which is close by.

TSR2 what might have been if we had politicians with ba$$s, instead we bought American but put Spey engines in it increasing the cost for modifying the body to take it.

If an aeroplane looks good it will probably fly good and this was the case according to the test pilot.

So the outgoing labour government had all the tooling jigs smashed up, even if we could not afford it maybe the export markets would have bought it.

It's an awesome place.

You think you've seen it all then you come across the US hanger with the blackbird.

Do be aware it gets a bit breezy.
