I did.

I was going on holiday a few years ago and forgot my passport - so my passenger took her cover from hers and we just flashed the passports (one being just a cover) through the window.

Unfortunately this didn't work on the way back.

I flew to Dublin and back using my driving licence as the only ID, no problems at all but Ireland might have a special agreement with the UK.
It does: you dont need a pssport to travel to Ireland. Airlines started insisting, but that was to satisfy their own conditions...

customs at calais are british, those at dover are french. the guys at calais told me that if you turned up at the french side without a passport they would see sense and just let you through.

its getting back out thats tricky, but still possible. i organised a trip to lux a year or so ago and one of our party had no passport. the ferry company wanted a passport but said this was company policy, not the law, and they'd agree to carry us if i got agreement from customs/embassies etc. both french and uk customs were fine using a driving license as ID, as were french/lux embassies. the belgiums had a problem with it though.

we didn't go in the end as the dippy non-passport owner also had no driving licence so no form of official photo ID whatsoever!
