Oman Air - rate them?
Discussion
moved to Oman a year ago but still spend too much time on PH
Oman air was pretty poor a year ago but a new fleet, CEO and lots of cash appears to have done the trick! I flew 4 months ago and all was very good value. First airline which allows mobiles and internet.
BA are direct but do stop briefly (45 mins) in Abu Dhabi to let most people off. It obviously adds about 1.5 hours but it is my choice for returning back home. Daytime flight to Oman and over night back. Oman air is the opposite.
Chedi is nice but there are a few options. Depends what you are looking for. Al Bustan has best food. Chedi is closer to town. Shangri La is the most resort like. Stay in Muscat and get out and about.

I'm a part timer Omaner. We use Oman Air all the time - they are very good. OK, the dollys are not the same as the best airlines but then it is a Muslim country/reserved approach. Economy seats on their brand new planes (which is what you get on the LHR-MCT route) are great, even for a 6ft 5 beanpole like me. Heathrow evening departure is handy and the afternoon flight back is nicely timed.
As for hotels - all the 'top' hotels are great - Al Bustan Palace, Shangri-la (3 hotels in the resort), Chedi (bit more minimalist, I don't like it, but most love it), Hyatt (I love this place for some reason). The Intercontinental is average - 70s building. The Crowne Plaza is OK, but not as good as the others.
I haven't met anyone who hasn't enjoyed Oman. It isn't cheap (exchange rate + expensive country in the first place), but the people are friendly and it is clean, you can drink the water, you won't get sick (like Egypt), great diving/snorkelling too. It is sooo not like Dubai with no skyscrapers.

I've spent a sum total of about 12 weeks in the Hyatt, one of my favourite hotels of all time Not so sure about Oman being a touristy destinition though, good place to work, especially compared to Saudi, but not somehwere i would have considered as a holiday destination IMHO.

Depends on what you want from a holiday. To me Sharm or Magaluf are the worst places to go.
