I need a good 5 day break for the week after next. I would like to go somewhere pretty developed and safe. It has to be warm and not too far – so Malaysia et al is out. I am thinking Dubai. So far I cannot see past that – but any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have been to Dubai any 5 star hotel suggestions are welcome particularly if you’ve used both beach and city centre hotels.

Any of the big beach hotels are good :

Jumeirah Beach hotel
Dubai marine beach hotel

etc etc.......

Great for relaxation and enough to keep you occupied for 5 days.

The Palace at One & Only Royal Mirage. Amazing! Can't wait to go back.

Cheers,

I stayed one night in the Burj Al Arab, 15th floor, overlooking the marina, and Wild Wadi... It was superb! You've got to go to the wild wadi. It was great fun for the kids.

Depends whether you simply want to stay around hotels and/or shop during the break. If so, Dubai is perfect, but if you think you might want to get out for a day or two and see something of the Middle East then I'd recommend Oman over Dubai.

Well, as previously mentioned, any of the big hotels on Jumeirah beach will suit you fine.

The One and Only is indeed very luxurious and well worth the extra money, and of the hotels I've used, I'd put in a good word for the Royal Meridien Beach Resort and the Hyatt, both of which have excellent pool areas.

If you want a classy, luxurious hotel that is not crowded with kids, try the Grosvenor House, on the marina. I've used it three times and it's a brilliant hotel. The rooms are very high standard and all the restaurants are amazing. It also as the coolest place to have a drink in all of Dubai - the Bhudda Bar.

Bear in mind though that it has no beach access, but runs a continuous free shuttle to the Royal Meridien (takes about 5 minutes).

To be honest, all of the hotels are very good (they just don't do cheap there!) so it'll come down to what amenities you want. As also mentioned above the Wild Wadi is brilliant, as is a quick look at the Burj. The new tallest building in the world is now open - it's a quite amazing sight when you come in to land and the tower is protruding way above the early morning cloud layer!

Enjoy your visit.

As a side note, and it's been some years since I stayed there, but the 'Hatta Fort Lodge' was absolutely superb. It is way out near the border with Yemen, and has a suoerb view of the mountains. It really is a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

What do you mean by hot? ATM it's mid 20's and a bit breezy. Not really hot enough to be cooking on the beech.

Hotels? I can recommend the Habtour Grand. It's located near the Marina/JBR and is an excellent hotel. Nice restaurants and bars, and the pool area is very nice. The beach is good too.
Right in the centre of town id look at the Hilton. Nice for the centre of town, and right on the creek.

Stick a post in the Middle East forum...there's a few on here that live in Dubai.

I used to like the Ritz Carlton as it was at the end of the strip, so to speak, but stopped going there once they started the building - it is way too noisy and overlooked.

The other that I like is the Royal Mirage, as mentioned above. High quality but far less blingy than many of the others.

If you want something spectactular for a couple of days then try out Zighy Bay - it's about a 2 hour drive out of Dubai, not the cheapest place but in a stunning location (one option of arriving is to paraglide to the resort), very quiet and secluded and I found that even after only two days I had completely relaxed. Didn't want to leave.
