pay the blokes with the cards on brown ribbons around their necks- you don't need to give them much.

Its really quite easy as long as you keep smiling, and don't get overwhelmed by the confusion of it all.

The motorway on the other side is invariably empty amusingly enough.

Diesel and Petrol in Ceuta is pretty cheap- Gib is even cheaper though (if you can be bothered to Queue to get in!)
If you go into Gib for petrool/diesel go in early in the morning, drive in across the runway to the roundabout and you have petrol stations either side of the road, then just drive back across the runway, and you should join the short queue at the frontier and be out.
Later in the day and especially late afternoon and you will have a 3or4 lane queue and can take a while.

worked out there for a year pretty much all over from the desert and the disputed zone in the south up to assilah, sidi kacem, agadir, marrakech etc. the atlas mountains are pretty impressive

driving is probably the best i've seen for north africa, its pretty poor and the vehicles are nackers but theres a hell of a lot worse.

sorry i cant comment on the hotels though we stayed in either the cheapest apartments we could find or trailers

About 20 minutes beyond Richard Branson's is Casbah du Toubkal an eco-hotel at the foot of Mt Toubkal the 2nd tallest mountain in Africa. About an hour from Marrakesh by bus.

It's fantastic.

In Marrakech we stayed in Dar Zamura and that was lovely and we alos spent a few days in Essouira (sp?!?) by the coast.

Liked it bit I didn't think it was great. Dar Zamura was a great haven away from the world though

The border crossing at Ceuta is easy. Don't pay anyone to help you, the officials are very officious but don't require bribes. They do, however, require respect and politeness.
