@ theboss: Check the date for the Ghentse Feste (sp?)
It's basically a weekend long piss up in Ghent, which isn't far from Bruges.

I'm organising a stag weekend in Bruges for a group of up to 20 this July and would be really keen to here how you guys got on. Although it's always struck me as a rather quaint little place I was there this weekend doing a bit of a recce and noticed a beer bike parked up like the ones shown above - does this mean it's catching on as a popular stag destination?
Well theres lots to tell really. We went in June 09 for my stag. We went with 11 guys and stayed in various places. 20 is quite a lot for Bruges (loads of hotels, but mostly quite small)

I'd aim to stay in the centre of the town a smuch as possible, you dont want to be out by the train station for example. Its a small little place and easy to walk around.

Really its not exactly designed for stag do's which is exactly why I wanted mine there. Im not really into strippers, pranks or general debauchery. I wanted a great weekend away with my mates, loads of beers and a few clubs. And Brugges fitted perfectly.

We stayed here:

Cheapest place in the centre of the town and as a hostel, does mostly have shared bathroom facilities. There are some rooms with ensuite though. Totally depends on budget, but we had quite a few guys on a tight one.. Some of the more well heeled werent so keen and booked their own more expensive places. Each to their own.

The main reason for me for going was the beers, im really into Belgian beers and this basically is mecca. Literally hundreds and hundreds of bars from swanky modern places to 15th century old creaky ones.

Here was a great place to start an evening:

http://www.cambrinus.eu/english.htm

Lovely food and over 400 beers from a menu. From here (or anywhere) simply follow your instinct and you will find somewhere. One of the beauties of the place is the small size and its pretty difficult to get lost. Litterally almost every street in the centre has a bar or two.

I'd try to avoid spending too much time in the ones by the Bell tower as they are very expensive, but they do have a nice view and good service. Again a good place to start a night.

Once the sun goes down there were 4 clubs / late night bars which were great to end up in and dance the rest of the night away.

Plenty of sights to see too, take a canal trip, go up the tower or simply walk around. Its like being in a living museum.

Depends on your requirements but i loved it. if you (or some in your party) are hoping for an amsterdam hooker / drug fuel session, then this isnt really the place. But its great for a bunch of more chilled / maturer lads looking to spend a great time in a great city.

How are you planning on getting there?

We drove and went on the ferry in a 'roadtrip' style and again had a great time. (A few started on the beers at 5 in the morning wink)

Train / euro star is OK, but bear in mind you will need to get to Brussells then a connecting train.

Looks like I'm settled on London as it happens. Thanks for the posts guys.
They do the bikes in London too. Saw a bunch of girls on one in Borough a few weeks ago (girls on one of these strikes me as utterly pointless though).

Agree with Berlin for those talking about Germany, but since when does the stag get a say in where he goes on the stag do? Very bizarre.

I did Brugge on my stag do as I wanted the same (Avoid the usual chavvy places) and it was stunning.

Cracking beer, great night life.
Went to Brugges on the same trip that included Colonge. Loved the place, excellent beers and some good bars. Bloody expensive though!

That stag do in Bruges organised by theboss has gone down in stag history... it was absolutely and truly epic and long shall it be remembered!

I coincidentally find myself here after typing "Cologne stag" into Google.

My stag do is taking place at the Nurburgring and Cologne in August - does anybody have any advice or recommendations for Cologne?

I assume you're aware that Cologne is the gay capital of Germany? I'm a live and let live type of guy but you might want to careful where you go as a big group of lads.

I've been to Germany every year for the last five years with some lads who I used to work with. One of the lads is in the Royal Marines Reserve and got called up to serve in Afghanistan. We went to Berlin as a welcome home party and we had such a great time we've been to Germany every year since. We've done:

2008: Berlin
2008: Frankfurt
2009: Munich
2010: Munich
2011: Berlin

I like all three places but I'd have to say Munich if I was asked which my favourite was, with Berlin a very close second. Munich still has the very Bavarian traditions and Berlin has all the cold war history. Frankfurt is very cosmopolitan due to it being a very prominent financial centre.

If you do Berlin, you have to have a dabble at this:

It is the Park Inn by Radisson in Alexanderplatz. We were staying close by and saw people jumping off it on the first day. Later that night I remember standing outside the kebab house in the podium building at the bottom, kebab in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other, pointing at the top saying "I'm jumping off that on the last day!".

I was reminded of what I said on the last day when we had a few hours to kill but not enough time to travel out too far. The second picture is one I took of somebody about to be dropped. The last one is a photo one of my mates took of me!

It is basically a huge seatbelt reel. They dangle you over the edge, count you down and drop you. It reaches near freefall speed and then slows you to a controlled stop where you land on the roof of the podium building.

If you do it, don't go into the hotel to book it as you'll get stung for about €80. If you go outside and look around, you'll see a few promo girls selling discount tickets. IIRC, the deal was €40 for your first jump, €40 for a second and a third one free.

This is a pretty good video I found on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa1I_lOKIOI&lis...

If you go to Berlin, I recommend the H2 Hotel which is right next to Alexanderplatz where there's loads going on and good for trams, trains and the U-bahn. It is very modern and while the facilities are basic, it has everything you need if you only need somewhere to get your head down - it is clean, comfortable, the showers are great and it is pretty cheap.

We haven't booked anything for this year yet but it is looking like Cologne in September.

No, i didn't. Kind of like the German Brighton? hehe

I think this must be destiny speaking... we were originally looking at Amsterdam on 3rd-5th... but this turned out to be Gay Pride.

Another vote for Berlin here. We did it a few years ago and had an absolute blast. We stayed in the "36 Rooms" hostel in the middle of Kreuzberg and really rated it. The night life was great and the city was great to walk around during the day.

We actually just got back off a stag in Lisbon two days ago. It was very good but couldn't beat Berlin for accessibility of bars/stuff to do and we struggled to find places to accomodate 14 blokes at once. We stayed at the Old Lisbon Hostel which as Hostels go was incredible.
