Where to drink in Berlin?
Discussion
Hi all.
My girlfriend and I are going to Berlin this Friday-Sunday, and we were hoping for some recommendations of where to drink in the afternoons/evenings.
We're staying in Potsdamer Platz, and we're looking for places with good beer selections and nice atmosphere. We don't mind it being "lively", but aren't really looking for clubs.
So far we've been recommended "Mommseneck" which is very near us, and "Aufsturz", which is quite far away really.
Anyone have any suggestions for us to check out?
Thanks in advance

I would recommend the New Berlin pub crawl. Google it and it will give you details. It's aim isn't to be lairy but to expose you to some of the more interesting bars in the city. It's not pricey, and you can drop out whenever you want. Do it Friday so that you can get an idea of what is where. Couples won't feel out of place as all types of groups go
hopefully i'm not too late but i got you pm so here's my thoughts:
i think the one you mention in your OP is your best bet for beer. beleive it or not, not every bar in berln is full of mustachioed men in lederhosen drinking from a huge selection of brews! plus if you are going fro strict traditional, you are missing what berlin is about imvho.
however, try:-
e&m leydicke: maistenstrasse 4
zur letzen instanz: waisenstr. 16
these are the two oldest pubs in berlin, very relaxed atmostphere, good beer. also worth checking out are:-
riva: dirckenstr. 142
victoria bar: postdamer str. 162
very well stocked bars, great cocktails.
tbh, you can stumble across amazing bars in berlin, particularly in kreuzberg and mitte. look around oranienstrasse in kreuzberg, we couldn't find the bar we were looking for but found one along here [can't recall the name] which was amazing. also had probably the fittest barmaid i've ever seen which is a bonus.
i could recommend more but i stay in mitte [old east german sector] which you might think is a bit of a trek. kaffeeburger is my favourite late bar [i.e. 4-5am when you roll out of a club]. its an old east german communist party social club, completely unchanged, very cool and with amazing music. its on torstrasse.
as for a club, i reckon 40 seconds will be up your alley if with the mrs. its at potsdamer str. 162, on the 17th floor. very relaxed, upmarket, really cool interior an a decent view!
also with the mrs, check out the atrium bar at karl-liebknechtstr. 3. nothing special, but it has a 25m high aquarium!
one thing i do recommend you do is visit the operncafe at the opernpalais for coffee and cake. this is very near museum island at unter den lintern 5. not cheap but not expensive, but i doubt you will limit yourself to only one piece of cake

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Well we went to a fair few bars whilst there, and had a really good time.
We took a look at the New Berlin Bar Crawl - it wasn't really our thing, but thanks for the suggestion.
Victoria Bar was one we did go in, and really enjoyed, so thanks for that one.
Oranienburger Strasse was great for bars, we were already heading there for Aufsturz anyway, but ended up visiting a fair few bars along the way (can't remember any names unfortunately ). I think Aufsturz was by far our favourite place we went, really great place.
We were already thinking of visiting the Atrium bar as we'd seen it when trying to find a hotel, so we did pop in there too following your recommendation. Not too bad at all, like most hotel bars it wasn't the most "lively" but certainly worth a visit.
Regards coffee and cake we headed to somewhere closer to our hotel, but quite right, more than one piece of cake was the order of the day.
Markytop - many may disagree with me, but I'd say that the TV Tower is worth going to. There are great views of Berlin lit up beneath you, and there is a bar which does some great cocktails. Its not cheap, but it was nice to spend a bit of time there looking out over Berlin. Tip - you buy your tickets, and they give you a time to come back for entry, so turn up a bit earlier than you want to visit to buy your ticket!

Thanks also for the suggestions - loved the city and will be going back again in the summer.
I did do the Pub Crawl mentioned above, and was OK for someone in the city on their own (which I was), even for a winter's night (was -15c and snowing a blizzard) there was about 30 people turned up and went to some interesting bars, the names after the first one (Zapata) I cant remember.
Was going to do the TV Tower based on your recommendation but the time had available to go there, it was snowing and couldnt see the tower, so would have been a bit of a waste, but is on my list of things to do.
Also for anyone else reading, there are plenty of cafes and places for coffee and cakes all the way along Fredichstrasse. Including the food court at the base of Gallery LaFayette.

Glad you enjoyed it. We too will be returning in the Summer. Seems Berlin makes a good impression on people I did do the Pub Crawl mentioned above, and was OK for someone in the city on their own (which I was), even for a winter's night (was -15c and snowing a blizzard) there was about 30 people turned up and went to some interesting bars, the names after the first one (Zapata) I cant remember.

zapata sounds familiar, latin place with a contraption spitting flame over the bar from time to time?
just over the road from there is my favourite place in berlin. the owner and bar look like they've just emerged from the, rubble of ww2, there is fk all decor, and he only serves one kind of beer. amazing place.

Seconded.I went to berlin a few months back and that was my fave place. Something very chilled about it with a an air of intellectualism. People who could sing were free to get up and perform and one German girl got on the mike and had an incredible voice.
We went to White Trash as well which is very highly rated but heavy punk and rock isn't my cuppa tea. Cool decor though but I was always more of an Afrika Bambatta planet rock type person than the Cure.
Oh, we also spent hours looking for the entrance to The Weekend club. It was in a tower block opposite our hotel but we never got in despite being able to see the purple lights on. I actually think it was closed but its worth a visit if you are there over sat and sunday.

Can't remember what its called but a brilliant pub near the tv tower based on a stock exchange ie the more people buy a beer the higher its price and vice versa, huge fun and prices change quite often notified by ringing of a bell.
Does anyone know the name of this pub near the tv tower? Am due to go to Berlin at the end of January and the concept sounds genius! Any other cool places to visit whilst im here?

Might be a bit cold at this time of year, but one of my favourites is Prater http://www.pratergarten.de/d/ A few serving hatches, with long lines of tables underneath some well established trees. Pig knuckle anyone from the bar snacks window?
Berlin is in my top two of favourite cities, the other being Noo Yark.

It's a restaurant & bar (2 floors)
Quite a nice place, but the key selling point is the view. It's on the 16th floor of a tall office building and offers a panoramic view of Berlin.

Thought I'd resurrect this rather than start a fresh. We're going to Berlin for a stag weekend from this Thursday. What sort of dress code do the majority of bars/ clubs have. I imagine it to be quite relaxed but I've no idea why? Would we be Ok in smart jeans, T-shirts and trainers, or would we be better taking shoes and shirts? Also, I've heard mention of a travel card. What is it and how much is it? We're staying right near the Ostbahnhoff so were thinking we could probably get to most of the sights on foot, and see more along the way. I've had a look airport transfers by train to the Ostbahnhoff are about 3euros each, each way.
