Get a gray line tour bus ticket and have a browse about, they are worth there money! there is some good places to see and a nice lobster place just off time square!

p.s - ask for discount on bus tickets, they will give you some. Try and get a room high up in your hotel as you cannot actually sleep as i swear the police put the sirens on/blow whistles just for a laugh

I normally avoid "touristy" things but really enjoyed going on the circle line cruise around Manhattan. I would say it is a must do if it's the first time in New York

Had a great tour guide who even wrote a book about New Yorks history, Malachy Murray.

A round trip on the Staten Island ferry is worth doing. It's free, you just walk on and you get to see the Manhattan skyline from the south. Time it right and you can return as the sun is setting.

Obviously not every one lives in NY but do you check out the "What to do in ****" threads when they apply to your home town? I have my mother arriving in a couple of hours so I am always on the look out for other places to take her in NYC.

Also, do you find that you don't do the tourist stuff unless someone is visiting?

Anyway, ideas,

The Beast boat around the island. Probably cold at this time of year
Helicopter tour - Still great even if they can no longer fly in and out of the buildings
Central Park. Just nice
Eat lots of steak at Pete Lugers
Have a Sea Food tower at balthazar for lunch in Soho
Check out "Restaurant week" for great deals on restaurants.
Possibly sign up to groupon as well.
When looking for a restaurant use opentable and menu pages.com
Try Carnegie deli and finish one of their sandwiches.
Go up Rockerfella. (I prefer it to the empire state building and you can buy tickets on the plaza at a tiny booth and skip all lines)
Just walk around and see how the island changes from area to area. A good guide book will explain the geological reasons for the heights of the buildings.
Go to Century 21. Can't stand the place myself but it is always full of over excited English people and there must be a reason for it. While you are there you can see ground zero and drop in on wall street before heading down to look at the Statue of liberty via the Bull.
Go to Hoboken for a beer on the first Saturday of March. (Insane) You only need to do it once.
Wear comfortable shoes. The ones you have already probably are not comfortable enough. Even though the subway is safe you will find yourself just walking everywhere soaking in the sights.

Don't bother with South street sea port on it's own. The only good thing to see is the east river views of the bridges.

Most of all though, please don't walk 5 abreast on the streets at 1 mph stopping randomly. I know you are here to enjoy the city but we are here to work and have to get to our offices.

Currently it is warmer than expected. Last night it was 65 degrees F. I am sure it is going to get very cold soon though.
