Lincoln cathedral. Hate where I currently live for university and happy every time I go back. See it for miles and miles around. Keeps me happy. Back in it's day(Build started in 1185 and finished in 1311) it was possibly the tallest building in the world for about 250 years.
Lincoln is one of my favourite Cathedrals, maybe even number one. Also love Wells Cathedral. The think which gets me about Cathedrals is that even today then have the ability to take your breath away; in an age when we are used to big stuff. I just cannot imagine the impact they must have had on people 800-1000 years ago when most structures, if not all were 2 stories, tops, and made of wood/earth. Mind blowing.
Not read the whole thread - apols.
I live on the outskirts of Glasgow, where on of the greatest designers and architects lived and worked - Charles Rennie Macintosh, best work ~ 1920.
There are some stunning buildings near us - glasgow college of art, scotland st school, the hill house. They don't look THAT. Fantastic from outside, but from inside, where you spend most time, is just epic. Amazing use of light and space.

This would be 2nd on my list. Been there and took some photos myself. When the sun is out the light catches and casts some interesting highlights and shaddows. It also has the classic beuty backdrop to define the location.
Did you take the tour inside the castle?
The grand hall is stunning.
