Can I nominate a building that no longer exists?
Fonthill Abbey - private home of quite insane proportions (the tower is ~300ft high, the front door was 30 ft high and opened by dwarves to make it seem even bigger). But built with inadequate foundations for the finished product, it fell down mere decades after completion.

I have to say, no matter how many times i have been, I find the roof and central Great Court of the British Museum captivating:
Something about the patterns and geometery of it. Also the contrast of walking out from between the big dark imposing stone entry archways and out into the white & light of the courtyard is a real shock.
(I also have a suspicion they play a low level of "white noise" through the PA system to fool the brain into thinking the courtyard is bigger than it really is, effectively by damping out the usual echo's that help us determine the size of things)
that was an utter fker of a project - every single piece of glass is bespokeSomething about the patterns and geometery of it. Also the contrast of walking out from between the big dark imposing stone entry archways and out into the white & light of the courtyard is a real shock.

This would be 2nd on my list. Been there and took some photos myself. When the sun is out the light catches and casts some interesting highlights and shaddows. It also has the classic beuty backdrop to define the location.
Did you take the tour inside the castle?
The grand hall is stunning.
I'm lucky enough to live just up the road in Munich so I'll definitely be heading back. I really want to see it in the snow.

And in a similar vein, Chateau Queribus in the south of Francehttp://www.catharcastles.info/queribus.php?key=que...
You can climb right up to the top, it has no safety ropes or anything! The only thing the French do is close it off in thunderstorms! You can see it from miles around.
IIRC across a huge valley was Peyreperteuse on a similar scale of limestone promentary.

Both utterly astonishing feats of architecture.
