Unless you're being pernickety about pronouncing the 'h' then yes, I would pronounce them exactly the same way. In the sentence "Stop whining and take me wining and dining" 'wining' and 'whining' would be indistinguishable..

Who pronounces the 'h' in words beginning 'wh' these days except affected poshos and Me Griffin? Or did you mean some other variation? ETA oh, and the Scotch.
I'm not pernickety about pronounciation, but I am about logic, and your post is a good example of the fallacy of the false dilemma. I pronounce the 'h' in words such as 'whining' (it's faint but it's there) and I am neither posh or Me Griffin (should that name mean anything to me?).
I've corrected it, it should be Meg. (daughter of Peter) Thanks for teaching me about the fallacy of the false dilemma, Prof. I've also added something which may help.

When you asked the question in your wonderful wide-eyed, innocent manner, though, had you thought about the way other people pronounce 'wh-' words or were you just taking your own pronunciation as the norm? If the former then you knew that it's just a regional variation, didn't you? Then again I don't know, perhaps you don't get out much. wink

I'm confused as to why you are confused? Don't you think that "rest bite" is a particularly good example of someone who having heard a word but never seen in written down giving it his best guess?

If he did mean that he should have said "During a rest bite whilst looking at the PH cars at the Sunday Service meet at MBW ................"

On an almost daily occurance, I come down the left hand lane, and keep a straight line, and will , being considerate, let a vechile on my right merge in, but there is always someone who beleives that I should merge into the right and therefore a battle ensues, which results in the vechile screeching to a halt as the right hand lane dissapears and he is confronted with the traffic island while i drive merrily along, and he blasting his horn as if i have done something wrong.

...and precisely what was the point of your comment?

To discourage people from contributing further to PH? To flatter your own ego with smartarse comments? or both?

If the former, well done - you are successful: Haven't been here much lately - just been reminded why, thanks for that rolleyes

erm, OK...if you say so. (no idea what you're on about, but suspect you've got the wrong end of the stick.)
