Hunter wellies - which ones?
Discussion
I have two pairs of Hunters.
A 'basic' pair, acquired in 2003, still going strong. Have done many miles in these.
A pair of Balmoral Neo, bought in 2010 iirc. Obviously only get used in the colder months - October to March usually, but also great and showing no signs of problem/wear etc.

these- I have the biggest calf muscles of anyone I've met, and my aigles just fit.
Is it something you often check when meeting people?"Hi, my names PugwasHDJ38. Nice to meet you."
"Hi"
"Can I see your calf muscles. Mine are massive?"

i don't really tend to mention it- but it becomes a little bit annoying when trying to find things like wellies, ski boots etc etc

Enough with the purple active st, it's freaking me out now
As others have mentioned. Avoid Hunters.
Aigle
Chameau
Muck Boot
SWMBO gets through boots like their going out of fashion (horses) and Muck Boot is now the favourite. I have had one pair of Aigles for 10 years for occasional shooting and dog walking and their still going strong.
With the Muck Boots check the sole type. There are three options and one is designed as a dual purpose riding/something boot. The tread has no depth and is useless in mud. The other two are far more aggressive and suitable for shooting/muddy activities.

For riding, mountain horse.

I think I have read somewhere (here?) that the Hunter Balmoral's are still good and I think the Argyle's are as well. But when a welly boot company describes their products as the "New Season 'Collection'" then I think you would be correct to discount them as something to wear in the filed every day.
I do have an old pair of 'original' hunters that were bought at the factory seconds shop across the road from the old factory (now shut, shop demolished) several years (15+) ago, which are the best wellies I have ever owned and have put up with a fair amount of abuse over the years, so I know how they managed do develop a good reputation that has now been virtually destroyed by poor manufacturing and 'image'.
I have spent a lot of time in willies over the years. I pushed the boat out and bought (well, put on the firms account) a pair of Dickies Landmaster's years ago and they are my favourite.
Expensive willies are for people that have recently moved to the countryside. Dad tried them all and ended up back with cheap ones.

Interesting.
Are you into chunky willies or soft ones?
I tried a pair of Hunters once, they felt about a tough as a Durex Featherlite. Fine if the extent of your welly wearing is walking your Labrador, no so fine if you are likely to tread on anything harder than a wet clod or get trodden on by something with cloven hooves. Are you into chunky willies or soft ones?
