Cunning juxtaposition. That rug could make any footwear look cool.
It has its work cut out there though.

You know, whilst I wouldn't wear 'em, they are quite cool.

Well spotted. I suspect the tartan slippers you posted earlier weren't your new shoes either?

Chuck Taylor IIs. Much improved and more comfortable than the originals - but you have to go up a size to take into account the gel sole.

Good choice.

I have the slightly less trendy version.

I've pretty much worn out my Chuck Taylor Is, so needed some new ones - seeing IIs at 30 quid tipped me into buying.

No, they were a response to someone else's post. But the photo you posted above seems unconnected with anything. Or have I missed summat?

Yes, they were a hilarious response to my shoes.

I thought as this was a shoe thread that they may be of interest to others as they were to me. I accept that they are neither mine nor new however, I didn't really feel they justified a thread devoted to them.

Feel free to ignore my posts if you do not understand them.

Thank you for giving me that option.

However, yes I agree they are interesting. Do you know anything about them?

You're most welcome and yes, that is what is interesting. wink

They are 40 year old John Lobb's as commissioned by Prince Charles. The article below is for another (very similar) pair of oxfords of the same vintage but is interesting nonetheless.

Is it wrong to think that they look st? (other than the toecap having been highly polished by a taxpayer-funded servant, of course...)

Not at all.

They are hardly the prettiest but the fact that they have survived what looks to be a particularly hard life is a testament to both the skill of the makers and the quality of materials used.

Obviously, they will have been re-soled and heeled numerous times but the uppers must still be original otherwise we would be firmly in Trigger's brush territory.

Prince Philip has a pair with a similar "patina".

Why would anyone want to wear shoes which appear to "have survived what looks to be a particularly hard life"?

Vintage look? People buy new stuff which looks old.

I wouldn't. I would like to wear a pair of shoe that were able to though.

They look very similar to a well-bulled pair of Army officer-issue brown shoes. The issue shoes are definitely not Lobb though!

As for why you'd want to wear an obviously well-worn/used and abused pair, I rather like the patina and dislike wearing very new stuff. All shoes (clothing too come to that) seem to get 'right' after about 5 years.

The replacement challenge is to find something exactly the same and then to wear it in as quickly as possible!
