Whilst JW don't provide any photos of the brolly's construction you can see that the tips are plastic, whereas the better makers use metal. There are several styles of Loakes. The ones you will encounter the most are the Design, Lifestyle and 1880 selection. The Design are made in India and tend to be fine, whereas the 1880 are made in England and are noticeably better quality. Looking at them the prices seem fairly normal, though a few seem cheaper than elsewhere. I've not used that website before.

Not bought Loakes from here but have had 2 x Barkers and a pair of RM Williams + belt. Absolutely fine to deal with and like you say often offer decent savings against their list price (which seemed pretty reasonable already when I checked). www.afarleycountryattire.co.uk

I mentioned this story before, but when I did a tour around the Northants factory shops a few years ago, I had a look in the JW shop. Some of the stuff in there was absolutely crazy, like metallic purple pointy boots. Anyway, I wanted to ask about what they have in my size so I went to find a member of staff. I looked around and there was only 4 people in the room;a middle aged couple
a random, normal looking guy in his 20s
an extremely extravogant guy with neckerchief, cuban heel crazy boots, brightly coloured tight suit of some description, strutting around rearranging the shoes
I took my chances and approached the neckerchief guy to ask for help.
Turns out he was just a standard JW customer. The shop assistant was out of sight getting something from the store room
It was at that point I realised that JW probably isn't my style.

Not being an ageing rocker myself, I feel a little out of place, and I dare say a bit of a 'square' being in there.
So here they are. First impressions, decent quality. Not quite Cheaney but not that far off. They seem the real deal (as per the website). Proper gw sole. Doesn't say where made however. Supplied in proper jw box complete with shoe bags. The bags are relatively cheap feeling tbh, certainly when compared to those supplied by Cheaney or Charles Tyrwhitt.

Relative size to other shoes. The plain brogues are 8.5. The two tones are 9. The JW are 8.5
Socks for PH.
I'll think about them. I'm around a 9. My left foot is a bit bigger than the right. 9s were too big. 8.5 about spot on for the left, right side is borderline. Jw site actually suggests downsizing by half.
